Mission

Our mission is to educate and advocate on behalf of the Edwards Aquifer and the natural heritage of the Hill Country region and its watersheds with special emphasis on Barton Springs.

About

In 2018 SOS Alliance continued its work as water watchdog and advocate for the springs, streams, aquifers, and rivers of Central Texas. Our conservation work areas include: endangered species habitat protection, educating the public on the fragile world of the Edwards Aquifer and Barton Springs; defending the Save Our Springs Ordinance, sustainable transportation, pollution prevention and environmental protection. In 2018 we expanded our Barton Springs University (BSU) water education program to reach more high school and college students and new citizens across the region. We grew the program to include Barton Springs 101 presentations in schools, snorkel tours of Barton Springs and Barton Creek, and hikes on the greenbelt. The program will continue culminate with the daylong BSU event at Barton Springs led by water experts from academia, governmental agencies, conservation groups and the private sector. We are working to protect Hill Country streams and creeks from municipal sewage discharge, such as Dripping Springs' approved permit to dump nearly 1 million gallons of effluent into Onion Creek. We are fighting planned highway expansions at the "Y" in Oak Hill that includes plans to excavate parts of the Edwards Aquifer recharge and contributing zones. And, we are working to advance city code amendments that would make development in the City of Austin Austin more water-efficient and climate-resilient, saving water and money through reuse and green storm water infrastructure.
