A NATIONAL CENTER FOR FIBER ART, TEXTILE CENTER WELCOMES MORE THAN 20,000 VISITORS EACH YEAR TO ITS CENTER. TEXTILE CENTER'S WIDE ARRAY OF PROGRAMMING EMBRACES ALL FORMS OF FIBER ART INCLUDING WEAVING, QUILTING, KNITTING, SEWING, DYEING, FELTING, NEEDLEWORK, LACE MAKING, BEADING, SCULPTURE, SOFT SCULPTURE, AND MULTI-MEDIA PIECES. LOCATED IN MINNEAPOLIS, TEXTILE CENTER IS UNIQUE AS THE ONLY TWIN CITIES' CENTER FOR FIBER ART. FIBER ARTISTS AND VISIONARY ARTS PATRONS STARTED THE ORGANIZATION 25 YEARS AGO. TEXTILE CENTER'S FACILITY, LOCATED IN MINNEAPOLIS' PROSPECT PARK NEIGHBORHOOD, OPENED IN 2001 AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAPITAL CAMPAIGN. BOTH ONSITE AND OFF, TEXTILE CENTER OFFERS MORE THAN 200 FIBER ART CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS EACH YEAR, AND ITS ARTS CENTER IS HOME TO A STATE-OF-THE-ART DYE LAB, FOUR GALLERIES, A RETAIL ARTISAN SHOP, CLASSROOMS, AND A LIBRARY THAT HAS ONE OF THE LARGEST CIRCULATING COLLECTIONS ON FIBER ART AND TECHNIQUES IN THE NATION, WITH MORE THAN 31,000 BOOKS AND PERIODICALS.YEAR-ROUND EDUCATION PROGRAMS PROVIDE A RANGE OF LEARNING EXPERIENCES, ENCOMPASSING WORKSHOPS SERVING MASTER ARTISTS TO INTRODUCTORY CLASSES FOR THE CURIOUS. NEARLY 2,000 ADULTS AND MORE THAN 1,500 YOUTH TAKE PART IN TEXTILE CENTER'S EDUCATION PROGRAMS. EXHIBITIONS ARE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, FEATURING TWO DOZEN SHOWS EACH YEAR IN ITS FOUR GALLERIES AND AT OFFSITE LOCATIONS, INCLUDING THE MINNESOTA STATE FAIR. OTHER PROGRAMS INCLUDE A RETAIL SHOP FEATURING HANDMADE TEXTILES AND FIBER ART, SUPPORTING MORE THAN 125 ARTISTS ANNUALLY. TEXTILE CENTER ALSO HOSTS ITS THE WORLD'S LARGEST TEXTILES GARAGE SALE EACH SPRING, RESELLING DONATED FABRIC, YARN, NOTIONS, AND TOOLS, WHICH PROVIDES SOURCE MATERIALS AT AFFORDABLE PRICES TO NEARLY 2,000 ARTISTS AND CRAFTERS IN THE REGION.TEXTILE CENTER IS SUPPORTED BY MORE THAN 1,000 INDIVIDUAL AND BUSINESS MEMBERS, AS WELL AS 30 AFFILIATED MEMBER GUILDS THAT INCLUDE THE WEAVERS GUILD OF MINNESOTA, MINNESOTA KNITTERS' GUILD, MINNESOTA CONTEMPORARY QUILTERS, MINNESOTA BASKET WEAVER'S GUILD, WEARABLE ARTS MIDWEST, AND THE MINNESOTA FELTMAKERS' GUILD.FIBER, FABRICS, AND TEXTILES HAVE BEEN INTEGRAL TO HUMAN HISTORY FROM THE STONE AGE TO THE PRESENT, AND EVERY WORLD CULTURE HAS A TEXTILE TRADITION. TODAY, TEXTILE CENTER HOSTS INTERNATIONAL TOURS, MOST RECENTLY TO MOROCCO AND GUATEMALA, AND BRINGS IN TEACHING ARTISTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD.TEXTILE CENTER USES ITS MISSION AS A TOUCHSTONE FOR ITS ACTIVITIES, CELEBRATING QUALITY IN FIBER ART AND PROVIDING LEADERSHIP IN ITS FIELD.
