Mission

Urban Roots' mission is to cultivate and empower youth through nature, healthy food and community. We provide paid job training internships along with career oriented educational activities that help prepare youth with the essential work-readiness and life skills needed for success in future success in college and careers. Our three programs--Conservation, Market Garden and Cook Fresh, provide a proven model of guiding and educating youth ages 14-21 to develop 21st century skills in job readiness, personal growth and entrepreneurship. Our unique progressive internship model engages youth for multiple years in crews during the summer and school year, where they earn $10/hr, increasing hours/pay rate, leadership roles and responsibilities with each year worked.

URBAN ROOTS ESTABLISHED THREE MAIN OBJECTIVES FOR ALL 58 YOUTH INTERNS WHO PARTICIPATED IN PROGRAMMING IN 2018. THE FIRST WAS THAT YOUTH GAIN 21ST CENTURY WORK AND LIFE-SKILLS THROUGH PAID EMPLOYMENT IN THE PROGRESSIVE PROGRAM MODEL, INCLUDING PROBLEM SOLVING, CRITICAL THINKING, INITIATIVE, COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION. THE SECOND WAS FOR YOUTH PARTICIPANTS TO LEARN NEW SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE; TO INCREASE THEIR SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE THROUGH EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING IN CONTENT AREAS OF GARDENING FOR MARKET, COOKING AND CONSERVATION; AND TO INCREASE THEIR AWARENESS OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE AREAS OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP, FOOD, WELLNESS AND CONSERVATION. THE THIRD WAS FOR YOUTH TO CONTRIBUTE AND FEEL CONNECTED TO THEIR COMMUNITY; TO BE AWARE OF THEIR IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY; AND TO CONDUCT COMMUNITY TOURS, CLASSES, EVENTS AND ENGAGE IN SERVICE LEARNING PROJECTS.CONSERVATIONCONSERVATION ENGAGED 31 YOUTH IN HABITAT RESTORATION ON 9 ACRES OF PARKLAND. THEY INSTALLED 2 POLLINATOR GARDENS AND MAINTAINED OVER 14,641 SQUARE FEET OF GARDENS, PLANTED 4,493 TREES, SHRUBS, FORBS AND GRASSES AND COLLECTED 18 POUNDS OF 44 SPECIES OF NATIVE SEED. INTERNS GAVE 8 TOURS OF PARKLANDS, ENGAGED 1964 COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN ENVIRONMENTAL RELATED ACTIVITIES, 141 YOUTH IN SERVICE LEARNING AND 104 VOLUNTEERS IN HABITAT RESTORATION. INTERNS ALSO HARVESTED 52 POUNDS OF HONEY FROM HIVES THEY MAINTAINED AND BIKED OVER 800 MILES TO THEIR WORKSITES!MARKET GARDEN 18 INTERNS FARMED 6 GARDENS ON 1 ACRE OF LAND TOTAL, GROWING 40 VARIETIES OF HERBS AND VEGETABLES FOR A TOTAL OF 13,340 POUNDS OF PRODUCE. 560 MEALS WERE MADE USING YOUTH-GROWN PRODUCE, 42 MEMBERS PURCHASED COMMUNITY SUPPORTED GARDEN SHARES AND THE REMAINING PRODUCE WAS DISTRIBUTED TO YOUTH FAMILIES, RESTAURANTS, GROCERY STORES, FARMERS MARKET STAND, ROOTS FOR THE HOME TEAM PARTNERSHIP AND HUNGER RELIEF EFFORTS. INTERNS AND STAFF ENGAGED 739 COMMUNITY MEMBERS, 216 SERVICE LEARNING STUDENTS AND 193 VOLUNTEERS.COOK FRESH12 YOUTH INTERNS PARTICIPATED IN THE COOK FRESH PROGRAM, SERVING OVER 800 MEALS WITH 20 CHEFS PARTICIPATING IN CHEF-LED LUNCHES AND ADDITIONAL CULINARY EDUCATION. YOUTH INTERNS WORKED ONE GARDEN SHIFT EACH WEEK TO FAMILIARIZE THEMSELVES WITH GARDEN PRODUCE. THEY ENGAGED 1730 COMMUNITY MEMBERS, 300 AT THE MN STATE FAIR IN A HEALTHY FOOD PRESENTATION. 400 SMALL-BATCH JARS OF PRESERVES WERE MADE FROM GARDEN PRODUCE TO BE SOLD AT THE FALL FARMERS MARKET. INTERNS ALSO ENGAGED IN HERITAGE RECIPE REVAMPING, INCREASING THE VEGETABLE CONTENT IN FAMILY RECIPES BROUGHT FROM HOME.
