CAER HAS BEEN SERVING THE COMMUNITIES OF ELK RIVER, ZIMMERMAN AND OTSEGO SINCE 1979 THROUGH THE COLLECTION OF FOOD AND PERSONAL CARE ITEM DONATIONS. ADDITIONAL ITEMS ARE PURCHASED BY CAER WITH CASH DONATIONS RECEIVED. EACH DONATION DOLLAR PROVIDES CAER WITH APPROXIMATELY 10 OF PURCHASING POWER, ALLOWING US TO MAXIMIZE OUR ABILITY TO PROVIDE A VARIETY OF FOOD OPTIONS TO CLIENTS. TO ASSIST OUR CLIENTS IN STRETCHING THEIR FOOD BUDGETS TO INCLUDE FRESH PRODUCE, CAER FORGED ALLIANCES WITH SECOND HARVEST HEARTLAND, THE FOOD GROUP FOOD BANKS, AS WELL AS LOCAL GROWERS AND GROCERS TO SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF FRESH PRODUCE OFFERED. IN TOTAL FOR ALL PROGRAMS IN 2019, CAER PROVIDED 827,462 POUNDS OF FOOD TO THE COMMUNITIES OF ELK RIVER, ZIMMERMAN AND OTSEGO. IN 2010, CAER INITIATED A SUMMER PROGRAM CALLED "KIDZ KITZ". THE PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO HELP FAMILIES WITH SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN BY PROVIDING ADDITIONAL MILK, BREAD, AND KID-FRIENDLY FOODS ON A WEEKLY BASIS DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS WHEN FREE/REDUCED LUNCHES ARE NOT AVAILABLE. IN 2019, 749 CHILDREN RECEIVED HELP THROUGH THE KIDS KITZ PROGRAM. ADDITIONAL FOOD OUTREACH PROGRAMS IN 2019 INCLUDED PROVIDING NON-PERISHABLE FOOD ITEMS TO OPEN DOORS FOR YOUTH, A DROP-IN CENTER FOR HOMELESS AND AT- RISK YOUTH (AGES 16-21), TARGETED SERVICES PROGRAMS AT SCHOOLS IN ISD728 AS WELL AS THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB TOTALLING OVER 13,000 POUNDS. WE ALSO PROVIDED 30 EMERGENCY FOOD BAGS TO SHERBURNE COUNTY HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES. CAER SERVES LOW-INCOME SENIORS IN ZIMMERMAN AND ELK RIVER BY DELIVERING BOTH PERISHABLE AND NON-PERISHABLE FOOD ITEMS TO SENIOR HOUSING UNITS. IN 2019, WE PROVIDED 22,885 POUNDS OF FOOD TO 110 SENIORS. THROUGH A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CHURCH OF SAINT ANDREW, IN 2019 WE PROVIDED PRODUCE DISTRIBUTIONS TOTALLING 22,520 POUNDS OF FOOD FOR NEARLY 300 HOUSEHOLDS.
