About this organization
Mission
Open Hands Midway was organized to meet the physical and emotional needs of the poor and disenfranchised by addressing their needs through the distribution of food, clothing, household items and counseling service.
About
Open Hands Midway seeks to meet the needs within its community through a number of outreach initiatives. Each Monday, Open Hands volunteers, in conjunction with other partners, prepare and serve nutritious meals, distributed clothing and household items, and provide encouragement and hope to over 200 people in need. Nurses are available for screening and Second Harvest has a staff available for food stamp eligibility. During 9 weeks in the summer we add an additional meal on Wednesday. Volunteers coordinate monthly street outreach where we serve a meal and offer clothing to people traveling on the Midway bus lines. Neighborhood pre-school and elementary school aged children participate in crafts, games and activities once a month during the school year and four times a week during the summer in our Kids' Club program. During the school year that includes breakfast and in the summer a nutritious lunch for all. In 2013 over 700 people attended our lawn parties which included entertainment as well as bringing together community members in a relaxing, welcoming atmosphere. Food is served along with free clothing, furniture, household items and backpacks with school supplies. A Christmas party for community children and refugees served about 100 people. Open Hands serves as a neighborhood emergency food shelf. In partnership with Second Harvest we hosted six produce drops of 9 to 12 pallets of food in the summer.
