OF THOSE SERVED: 36 PERCENT ARE WHITE, 30 PERCENT ARE LATINO, 21 PERCENT ARE AFRICAN AMERICAN, AND 13 PERCENT ARE ASIAN, NATIVE AMERICAN, OR MULTI-RACIAL. ADDITIONALLY, MANY OF OUR SUPPORTIVE ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS SERVE DAKOTA COUNTY'S AGING POPULATION, WITH MORE THAN 800 SENIORS ACCESSING OUR SUPPORT LAST YEAR. NEIGHBORS, INC. HAS EVOLVED OVER TIME AS THE NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY HAVE GROWN. VOLUNTEERS ARE INTEGRAL TO THE WORK OF NEIGHBORS, AND LAST YEAR THEY SPENT MORE THAN 41,281 HOURS WORKING IN FIVE FOOD PROGRAMS, EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE AND OUR CLOTHES CLOSET THRIFT STORE, ALONG WITH SUSTAINING SEVERAL OTHER PROGRAMS, INCLUDING TRANSPORTATION TO MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS. IN TURN, PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEOPLE TO HELP THEIR FELLOW CITIZENS IS A PROGRAM IN ITSELF. WHEN A PERSON COMES TO NEIGHBORS FOR FOOD ASSISTANCE THEY ARE QUICKLY WRAPPED IN A COMPREHENSIVE EFFORT TO ENSURE THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO HAVE ACCESS TO A WIDE VARIETY OF SERVICES AND PROGRAMS, BEYOND JUST FOOD. VISITORS CAN BE SCREENED FOR ELIGIBILITY FOR ALL FEDERAL OR STATE PROGRAMS INCLUDING FOOD PROGRAMS, HOUSING ASSISTANCE, CHILD CARE, MEDICAL INSURANCE, ETC. AND, WHEN APPROPRIATE, ARE REFERRED TO A PARTNER SERVICE PROVIDER OR AGENCY THAT CAN ASSIST THEM. WE KNOW THAT KNOWLEDGE OF, AND ACCESS TO, A WIDE VARIETY OF SERVICES IS PART OF THE PROVEN SOLUTION TOWARD FOUNDATIONAL STABILITY AND SELF-EFFICACY. THE SEVEN NORTHERN DAKOTA COUNTY COMMUNITIES THAT NEIGHBORS SUPPORTS FACE THE CHALLENGES OF RISING POVERTY LEVELS AND HIGH COSTS OF HOUSING AND TRANSPORTATION. THE AVERAGE POVERTY RATES OF THE COMMUNITIES WE SERVE HAVE INCREASED IN THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS. IN ADDITION, AN AVERAGE OF 33% OF THE HOUSEHOLDS IN OUR SERVICE AREA ARE PAYING MORE THAN 30% OF THEIR INCOME ON MONTHLY HOUSING COSTS, MEANING THEY ARE DEFINED AS HOUSING COST BURDENED. THE HIGH COST OF LIVING HAS LEFT MANY FAMILIES JUST ONE CRISIS AWAY FROM NEEDING ASSISTANCE. SPECIFIC SERVICES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: EMERGENCY SERVICES:* FOOD - OUR FOOD SHELF IS AT THE CORE OF WHAT WE DO AND SERVES THE MOST PEOPLE, IN A SHOPPING (PERSONAL CHOICE) MODEL. EACH FAMILY SERVED IN THE FOOD SHELF SHOPS FOR SUFFICIENT FOOD FOR THREE MEALS A DAY FOR A WEEK. IN 2018, NEARLY A MILLION POUNDS OF FOOD WAS DISTRIBUTED MORE THAN 8,000 FAMILIES. OUR FOOD SUPPORT ALSO INCLUDES FRESH BAKERY AND PRODUCE AVAILABLE DAILY ON A FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVED BASIS IN OUR NEIGHBORS' EXPRESS AREA. WE ALSO DISTRIBUTE FOOD FOR ONE USDA PROGRAM FOR SENIORS, PROVIDE EMERGENCY/COURTESY PACKS OF FOOD FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE HOMELESS AND COORDINATE VOLUNTEERS FOR THE SUMMER MEALS PROGRAM THAT SERVES 40,000+ MEALS TO LOCAL CHILDREN IN SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAMS. * INDIVIDUALIZED SERVICES - CLIENT ENGAGEMENT SPECIALISTS ASSIST PEOPLE THROUGH ONE-ON-ONE VISITS. THROUGH CONVERSATION, THEY WILL AUTHORIZE BOTH FOOD SHELF USAGE AND CLOTHING VOUCHERS. THEY ALSO CONNECT CLIENTS WITH MEANINGFUL RESOURCES, SUCH AS FOOD SUPPORT PROGRAMS, ENGLISH LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION CLASSES, LEGAL ASSISTANCE, EMPLOYMENT COUNSELING, EDUCATION RESOURCES, ENERGY ASSISTANCE AND DOMESTIC ABUSE SHELTERS.* EMERGENCY GRANTS AND FINANCIAL COUNSELING - NEIGHBORS STAFF WORK TO ALLEVIATE IMMEDIATE FINANCIAL NEED FOR THOSE WHO ARE FACED LOSS OR THREAT OF LOSS OF BASIC MATERIAL NEEDS SUCH AS HOUSING AND UTILITIES.
