MARION P. THOMAS CHARTER SCHOOL, INC. (THE "CHARTER SCHOOL") IS THE LARGEST INDEPENDENTLY-OPERATED FREE PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL IN NEWARK, NEW JERSEY. THE CHARTER SCHOOL WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1999 BY A GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS WHO WERE BORN AND RAISED IN NEWARK AND WANTED TO PROVIDE THE BEST POSSIBLE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF NEWARKERS. THE SCHOOL IS ONE OF THE ONLY MINORITY-LED CHARTER SCHOOLS IN NEWARK, REFLECTING BOTH ITS STUDENT POPULATION AND THE COMMUNITY IT SERVES. SINCE 1999, IT HAS GROWN FROM FOUR CLASSROOMS TO FOUR CAMPUSES AND NOW SERVES 1,359 STUDENTS FROM PRE-KINDERGARTEN THROUGH THE 12TH GRADE. IT OFFERS A SEAMLESS EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE FROM "CRAYONS TO COLLEGE," GIVING NEWARK RESIDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO STAY WITHIN ONE SCHOOL SYSTEM FOR THEIR ENTIRE PUBLIC EDUCATIONAL CAREER FROM PREKINDERGARTEN TO 12TH GRADE.

IN 2017-2018, THE CHARTER SCHOOL HAD SERVED 1,359 STUDENTS THROUGH ITS PRE-KINDERGARTEN TO 12TH GRADE CURRICULUM AND SEAMLESS EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE FROM "CRAYONS TO COLLEGE." DURING THE YEAR, THE CHARTER SCHOOL UNDER TOOK MAJOR INITIATIVES IN ORDER FOR OUR VILLAGE TO CONTINUE TO ACHIEVE ITS HIGH LEVELS OF EXCELLENCE. AFTER SECURING CHARTER RENEWAL, MPTCS PARTNERED WITH A LOCAL DEVELOPER TO BEGIN ACQUISITION AND RENOVATION OF TWO NEW PROPERTIES IN NEWARK (538 CLINTON AVENUE AND 28 BURNETT STREET), BOTH FORMER DISTRICT SCHOOLS, TO HOUSE FUTURE ENROLLMENT GROWTH.ACROSS ALL GRADES, PROFICIENCY IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS GREW 2.7% AND IN MATH GREW 2.8%. FOR JUST ELEMENTARY GRADES, PROFICIENCY GREW 4.2% IN ELA AND 4.4% IN MATH. BECAUSE OF THIS SIGNIFICANT GROWTH, MPTCS MET ALL OF ITS GROWTH TARGETS UNDER FEDERAL SCHOOL ACCOUNTABILITY STANDARDS.
