Mission

Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity (GMHfH) is a non profit which builds decent, perpetually affordable and energy efficient homes and sells them at cost to low-income working families who currently live in substandard and unsafe conditions and who can't afford a home on the open market. The families pay less for their new mortgage/property taxes/ homeowners insurance than they did in rent, allowing them to become more financially secure. Families who have stable housing are healthier and less likely to need government assistance; their children do better in school, are more likely to graduate from high school than children of low-income renters, and twice as likely to acquire postsecondary education. We raise all revenue locally and want to build more homes each year.

About

GREEN MOUNTAIN HABITAT FOR HUMANITY (GMHFH) HAS BUILT SIMPLE, DECENT AND PERPETUALLY AFFORDABLE HOMES FOR WORKING LOW-INCOME FAMILIES IN CHITTENDEN COUNTY, VERMONT SINCE 1984. GMHFH HELPS FAMILIES WHO CURRENTLY LIVE IN SUBSTANDARD AND UNSAFE CONDITIONS AND HAVE NO POSSIBILITY OF OBTAINING A HOME THROUGH CONVENTIONAL MEANS. IN ADDITION, THE HABITAT RESTORE HAS MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR HUNDREDS OF LOCAL FAMILIES STARTING OUT TO FURNISH THEIR HOMES AT PRICES THAT ALLOWED THEM TO STAY OUT OF DEBT. THIS YEAR MANY FAMILIES WERE IMPACTED BY THE WORK OF GMHFH. THESE AFFORDABLE HOMEOWNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES WILL PROVIDE SHELTER AND STABILITY AS WELL AS HELP FAMILIES MOVE OUT OF POVERTY, AND AT THE SAME TIME ARE NOW BUILDING CAPITAL. SEVENTY-SEVEN HOMES HAVE BEEN BUILT BY GMHFH, AND EACH YEAR BETWEEN 400 AND 1,500 VOLUNTEERS TURN OUT TO LEND A HAND TO THESE LOCAL FAMILIES IN NEED.
