Mission

Rio Grande Food Project envisions a community where all people have access to enough quality food to live their most healthy life. Our mission is to alleviate hunger and food insecurity directly by providing food aid to those facing food insecurity and indirectly by facilitating access to community programs and resources that address the causes and effects of hunger and food insecurity.

About

RGFP provides low-income individuals and families with up to a week's worth of emergency groceries once a month, and also provides health-tailored foods to households facing chronic health conditions on a weekly basis. RGFP grows fruit and vegetables using a rain catchment system and also reduces local food waste by rescuing thousands of pounds of safe, edible food from local stores which would otherwise be thrown away. In 2019, RGFP distributed 1,313,101 pounds of food, serving an average of 3,587 people each month. RGFP also acts as administrator for PNM's Good Neighbor Fund utility bill assistance program as well as the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority's bill assistance programs, providing additional aid to low-income New Mexicans.
