HELP IS A FOUR-LEGGED WORD TRAININGPROFESSIONAL CANINE COMPANIONS INSTRUCTORS SPEND SIX TO NINE MONTHS TEACHING THE DOG TO MASTER MORE THAN 40 COMMANDS, BEFORE THE DOG CAN BE MATCHED WITH AN ADULT OR CHILD WHO HAS A DISABILITY, OR A PROFESSIONAL ASSISTING PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS. WE TRAIN FOUR TYPES OF ASSISTANCE DOGS TO BEST SERVE OUR CLIENTS:-SERVICE DOGS - ASSIST ADULTS WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITIES BY PERFORMING DAILY TASKS, SUCH AS PICKING UP DROPPED ITEMS, OPENING DOORS AND TURNING LIGHTS OFF AND ON.-SKILLED COMPANIONS - ENHANCE INDEPENDENCE FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS WITH PHYSICAL, COGNITIVE AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES UNDER THE ASSISTANCE OF A FACILITATOR, TYPICALLY A PARENT OR CAREGIVER.-HEARING DOGS - ALERT PEOPLE WHO ARE DEAF OR HARD OF HEARING TO IMPORTANT SOUNDS.-FACILITY DOGS - WORK WITH A PROFESSIONAL WHO DIRECTLY SERVES CLIENTS WITH DISABILITIES OR SPECIAL NEEDS IN A VISITATION, EDUCATION, CRIMINAL JUSTICE OR HEALTHCARE SETTING.THE MATCHING OF RECIPIENTS AND CANINES TAKES PLACE DURING TEAM TRAINING, AN INTENSIVE TWO-WEEK TRAINING COURSE WHERE STUDENTS ARE MATCHED AND LEARN TO WORK WITH THEIR NEW ASSISTANCE DOGS. OUR STAFF KNOWS EACH INDIVIDUAL DOG'S UNIQUE QUALITIES - ENABLING US TO RELIABLY MATCH PEOPLE WITH THE DOG THAT WILL BEST MEET THEIR NEEDS. STUDENTS ALSO LEARN TECHNIQUES TO EXPAND THE RANGE OF COMMANDS TO MEET THEIR PARTICULAR NEEDS. IN ADDITION, EACH STUDENT MUST DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY TO PROVIDE FOR THE DOG'S CARE AND WELL-BEING BEFORE GRADUATING WITH A CANINE COMPANIONS ASSISTANCE DOG. SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 1975, CANINE COMPANIONS FOR INDEPENDENCE HAS GRADUATED 6,022 ASSISTANCE DOGS AND CURRENTLY HAS OVER 2,399 ACTIVE GRADUATES.
