About
NORTHWEST FOLKLIFE IS A WASHINGTON-BASED CULTURAL AND ARTS NONPROFIT PROVIDING A PLATFORM AND RESOURCES FOR CULTURAL EXCHANGE AMONG THE DIVERSE COMMUNITIES OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. OUR PROGRAMMING - FROM OUR 48 YEAR OLD ANNUAL FESTIVAL TO OUR YOUTH ARTIST RESIDENCIES - INTENTIONALLY USES ARTS, HERITAGE AND CULTURAL TRADITIONS TO BRIDGE COMMUNICATION, UNDERSTANDING AND COLLABORATIVE ACTIVITY, ACROSS GENERATIONS, ACROSS RACIAL AND ETHNIC BACKGROUNDS, INCLUSIVE OF DIVERSE EXPRESSIONS OF IDENTITY, AND IN SUPPORT OF EVOLUTION AND TRANSFORMATION. FROM DAILY CREATIVITY AND IMAGINATION TO FAMILY AND COMMUNITY CUSTOMS, FOLKLIFE IS A PART OF EACH OF OUR LIVES - PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE. CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O.OUR MISSION, TO CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL TO CELEBRATE, SHARE, AND PARTICIPATE IN THE EVOLVING CULTURAL TRADITIONS OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST, IS COMMUNITY-POWERED THANKS TO FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTORS, SPONSORS, VOLUNTEERS, PARTNERING ORGANIZATIONS, ARTISTS AND CULTURAL LEADERS. THE THREE MAIN PROJECTS THAT WE UNDERTAKE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR PROVIDE ACCESS FOR ALL TO PARTICIPATE TOGETHER - WITH NO TICKETS, GATES OR REGISTRATION - CREATING THE MOST INCLUSIVE, WIDE-REACHING ARTS EXPERIENCE IN THE REGION.THE ANNUAL NORTHWEST FOLKLIFE FESTIVAL IS HELD OVER MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND EACH YEAR AT THE SEATTLE CENTER, HISTORIC SITE OF THE 1962 WORLD'S FAIR. THE FOUR DAY FESTIVAL FEATURES OVER 5,000 PERFORMERS ON 20+ STAGES AND IS ATTENDED BY ABOUT 250,000 PEOPLE ANNUALLY. CENTRAL TO THE VALUES OF OUR ORGANIZATION IS FOR COMMUNITIES TO HAVE VOICE AND AGENCY IN THE REPRESENTATION OF THEIR CULTURAL EXPRESSIONS. THIS IS REFLECTED IN THE CO-CURATION OF THE FESTIVAL SHOWCASES BY OVER 110 COMMUNITY COORDINATORS, WHO ARE PROMINENT ARTISTS, EDUCATORS AND LEADERS IN MANY ORGANIZATIONS THROUGHOUT THE REGION AND WHO OFTEN PARTNER WITH US ON PROGRAMS YEAR-ROUND. THE YEARLY CULTURAL FOCUS IS A PROGRAM THAT ALLOWS US TO HIGHLIGHT AND WORK MORE DEEPLY WITH CULTURE-BEARERS FROM A PARTICULAR COMMUNITY. ONE EXAMPLE, THE ECHOES OF AZTLAN AND BEYOND, IS AN EXPLORATION AND CELEBRATION OF MEXICAN AMERICAN AND CHICANA/O COMMUNITIES FROM AROUND THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST THROUGH STORIES, ART, FILM, MUSIC, SONG, CUISINE, DANCE, LANGUAGE, AND CULTURE. THE COMMUNITY-LED COMMITTEE WORKED WITH NORTHWEST FOLKLIFE STAFF FOR THREE YEARS TO PLAN AND PREPARE FOR THIS YEAR-LONG SCHEDULE OF PROGRAMS AND EVENTS. OUR CULTURALLY-CENTERED, YEAR-ROUND YOUTH ARTIST PROGRAMS, PROXIMA GENERACION AND UNBROKEN CIRCLE, WERE DEVELOPED IN RESPONSE TO THIS COMMITTEE'S COMMITMENT TO PROVIDING CULTURAL MENTORSHIP, HERITAGE EXPLORATION AND EXPRESSIVE COLLABORATION OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNGER GENERATIONS. OUR BIG NEIGHBORHOOD IS A MULTI-YEAR PROGRAM INITIATIVE, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SEATTLE CENTER, TO INCREASE PARTICIPATORY, MOVEMENT-BASED INTERGENERATIONAL CULTURAL ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN, YOUTH AND FAMILIES. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, THERE ARE FIVE PROGRAMS UNDER THE LARGER INITIATIVE INCLUDING: TWO WEEKLONG SESSIONS OF MOVIN' AROUND THE WORLD; THE LATE SUMMER, OUTDOOR GLOBAL PLAYGROUND SERIES; AN EXPANDED (TWO-DAY) SEATTLE CHILDREN'S FESTIVAL; AND A KICK-OFF EVENT FOR THE SEATTLE CENTER'S WINTERFEST ACTIVITIES. THIS PROGRAM WILL CONTINUE TO EVOLVE IN FUTURE YEARS.
