Mission

Historic Routt Countys mission is to preserve and to promote the heritage of Routt County communities and rural areas through the built environment. Historic Routt County connects yesterdays places with tomorrow.

About

-Preservation Projects: This is the cornerstone of our work. We facilitate collaborative projects to preserve the built environment, and to interpret and promote our community's historic resources. Historic Routt County assists willing property owners to rehabilitate, stabilize, or restore their historic properties by offering technical assistance, serving as project manager, helping with grant management, and providing other services as needed for each individual project. For example, in 2018 we completed the multi-year, multi-phase rehabilitation of the historic Crossans Market in Yampa, CO. The market building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. After the business owners closed the markets doors in 1964, the building was used as storage and became severely deteriorated to the point that it was considered one of Colorados Most Endangered Places. Now that it has been restored, the market houses Yampas Town Hall and a regional visitors center with historical exhibits. In 2020, Crossans Market will host a touring Smithsonian exhibit, which we hope will encourage heritage tourists to visit the area and contribute to the regions economic diversification. Historic Routt County also participated in a public-private partnership in 2018 to relocate and preserve the historic Arnold Barn. The barn, built in 1928, was sinking into a manmade wetland. Now that it has been relocated and preserved, it stands as an authentic landmark to welcome visitors and residents to Steamboat.-Historic Designation and Documentation: Historic Routt County partners with willing property owners to document or nominate historic properties to the Routt County, Colorado State and/or National Registers of Historic Properties. This is Historic Routt County's most far-reaching and successful program. Since 1999, HRC has helped over one hundred individual property owners successfully list their property on a historic register, an important step towards historic preservation and often required for grant eligibility. Designation entails documenting and nominating an eligible building, structure, object, or site which is at least 50 years old and has historic, architectural and/or geographical significance and integrity. Designation is honorary, not regulatory. The property becomes eligible for a variety of financial incentives at the local, state, and federal levels.-Outreach and Education: HRC presents and sponsors programs, workshops, forums and tours about Routt County historic and cultural resources, and facilitates interpretation of historic sites with area museums. We partner with local and regional groups to provide resources and guidance for historic preservation issues and heritage tourism initiatives. HRC writes a regular column for the local press that features photographs and stories about the area's historic buildings and cultural landscapes. We maintain a website rich with history of local buildings and with updates on local preservation activities and events.
