SAN MIGUEL RESOURCE CENTER (SMRC) BELIEVES IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOT ONLY RESPOND TO CRISES WITH EMERGENCY AND LONG-TERM SUPPORTIVE SERVICES, BUT TO ALSO ADDRESS THE ROOTS OF VIOLENT BEHAVIOR WITH PREVENTION EDUCATION IN THE SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY AWARENESS EVENTS. OUR AGENCY STRUCTURE IS BASED ON THE FOLLOWING FIVE PROGRAM AREAS: CLIENT SERVICES, PREVENTION EDUCATION, CULTURAL OUTREACH, VOLUNTEER TRAINING, AND RURAL OUTREACH.CLIENT SERVICES - THE GOAL IS TO PROVIDE QUALITY SERVICES AND CRISIS INTERVENTION TO CLIENTS THROUGH EMPOWERMENT, EDUCATION AND SUPPORTIVE SERVICES. SMRC STAFF AND ADVOCATES CARRY OUT KEY ACTIVITIES FOCUSED ON THE FOLLOWING CORE ELEMENTS OF ADVOCACY: 1) PROVIDING INFORMATION ABOUT ADULT AND CHILD SURVIVORS' RIGHTS, OPTIONS AND EXPERIENCE, 2) SAFTEY PLANNING, 3) BUILDING SKILLS, 4) OFFERING ENCOURAGEMENT, EMPATHY, AND RESPECT, 5) PROVIDING SUPPORTIVE COUNSELING, 6) INCREASING ACCESS TO COMMUNITY RESOURCES AND OPPORTUNITITES, 7) INCREASING SOCIAL SUPPORT AND COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS, AND 8) WORKING TOWARD COMMUNITY AND SYSTEMS CHANGE. REASEARCH INDICATES THE CORE ELEMENTS OF ADVOCACY CORRELATE WITH IMPROVED VICTIM OUTCOMES. IN 2018, ALL AGENCY STAFF, INCLUDING SIX FULL TIME AND TWO PART TIME EMPLOYEES, PROVIDED DIRECT CLIENTS SERVICES TO 205 VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT WITH 1,961 PHONE CONTACTS AND 1,551 IN PERSON SESSIONS. EMERGENCY SAFEHOUSING WAS PROVIDED TO 18 ADULTS AND 6 CHILDREN TOTALING 81 NIGHTS OF SHELTER.PREVENTION EDUCATION - THE GOAL IS TO REDUCE YOUTH INTERPERSONAL VIOLENCE IN OUR SERVICE AREA. OUR LESSONS STRIVE TO DEVELOP STUDENTS' SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL SKILLS, INTER- AND INTRA-PERSONAL AWARENESS, SELF-EFFICACY, COPING SKILLS AND SELF REGULATION TECHNIQUES. STAFF USES AN EVIDENCE-BASED CURRICULUM AND PROVIDED 438 VIOLENCE PREVENTION PRESENTATIONS DURING 2018 IN THE THREE SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN OUR SERVICE REGION, INCLUDING TEEN DATING VIOLENCE PREVENTION, BULLYING PREVENTION, AND EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILL-BUILDING. WE PILOTED A PEER ADVOCACY PROGRAM, A NEW INITIATIVE, IN TELLURIDE HIGH SCHOOL. INTERESTED JUNIORS OR SENIORS PARTICIPATED IN A TRAINING DEVELOPED BY SMRC, BASED ON OUR CURRENT ADVOCATE TRAINING BUT TAILORED TO ADOLESCENTS. THE OBJECTIVE IS TO DEEPEN THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF TOPICS LIKE HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS, CONSENT, COMMUNICATION, AND TEEN DATING VIOLENCE WHILE BUILDING ADVANCED LISTENING AND ADVOCACY SKILLS TO EFFECTIVELY OFFER SUPPORT TO THEIR PEERS. ONE FULL TIME AND ONE PART TIME STAFF ARE DEDICATED TO MANAGING THE PREVENTION EDUCATION PROGRAM REACHING OVER 800 STUDENTS. DURING 2018, OUR PEER ADVOCACY PROGRAM TRAINED 13 STUDENTS WHO ARE NOW PEER ADVOCATES.ADVOCATE PROGRAM - THE GOAL IS TO NURTURE AND MAINTAIN A POOL OF CERTIFIED VOLUNTEER ADVOCATES TO STAFF OUR 24-HOUR HELPLINE. THIS PROGRAM EDUCATES OUR COMMUNITY ABOUT VICTIM ISSUES, CERTIFIES VOLUNTEERS AS VICTIM ADVOCATES AFTER COMPLETION OF A 40-HOUR TRAINING PROGRAM, AND INVOLVES THE COMMUNITY IN SOCIAL CHANGE ACTIVITIES. ONE DEDICATED STAFF POSTION WILL MANAGE THE PROGRAM. STAFF AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS FROM LAW ENFORCEMENT, SOCIAL SERVICES, A SANE NURSE, THERAPISTS, AND THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY ASSISTING WITH TRAINING TOPICS SPECIFIC TO THEIR EXPERTISE. IN 2018, WE OFFERED CONTINUAL 24-HOUR HELPLINE COVERAGE AND PROVIDED THREE VOLUNTEER ADVOCATE TRAININGS, HOSTING TWO TRAININGS IN TELLURIDE AND ONE IN THE WEST END RESULTING IN 23 NEW ADVOCATES.CULTURAL OUTREACH - OUR CULTURAL OUTREACH PROGRAM ENSURES INCLUSIVE AND ACCESSIBLE SERVICE TO ALL MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY. IN 2018, WE IMPLEMENTED OUR INCLUSION ACTION PLAN, WHICH IDENTIFIES ACTION ITEMS TO ADDRESS THE TARGET POPULATIONS IDENTIFIED IN OUR CULTURAL AUDIT. MANY OF THE STRATEGIES INVOLVE UPDAING MATERIALS FOR INCLUSIVE LANGUAGE, DEVELOPING OR ENHANCING COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS, CONTINUED TRAINING FOR STAFF, AND FACILITATING PRESENTATIONS FOR DIFFERENT INDUSTRIES IN OUR COMMUNITIES. WE PRIORITIZE MAKING TRAININGS, MATERIALS, AND SERVICES AVAILABLE IN SPANISH AS WELL. ONE DEDICATED STAFF POSTION WILL MANAGE THE PROGRAM WITH ALL STAFF ASSISTING IN INCLUSION EFFORTS AND TRAININGS.RURAL OUTREACH - OUR GOAL IS TO PROVIDE HIGH QUALITY, ACCESSIBLE SERVICES TO MEET THE NEEDS OF CLIENTS LIVING IN THE RURAL ISOLATED WEST END OF OUR SERVICE AREA. WE WILL ENHANCE OUR EFFORTS BY INCREASING STAFF TIME IN OUR SATELLITE OFFICES, PROMOTING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF STAFF AND PARTNERS, INCREASING COMMUNITY AWARENESS EFFORTS, AND COLLABORATING WITH OTHER SERVICE PROVIDERS TO PROMOTE VICTIM SAFETY.
