Mission

InSight Crime’s mission is to deepen and inform the debate about organized crime in the region by providing regular reporting, analysis, investigation, and policy suggestions on how to tackle the multiple challenges it presents. We believe that change comes by obtaining and publishing ground truths about the phenomenon, and via direct and indirect engagement with the key stakeholders, government actors, elites, and local communities who implement social, health, economic, education, and citizen security programs in these areas.

About

Our work began with a website in English, which three years later, added full translations of all articles into Spanish. It is now merged into a bilingual platform that produces between five and eight original news analysis articles per week, about one long-form investigation every two months, and a smattering of investigative articles throughout the year. The website also produces and updates profiles of criminal actors, groups, and countries. There are currently some 250 such profiles on the site, and we are continually adding new ones. Between the news articles – which are organized geographically, by criminal group, and by theme – the investigations, and the profiles, we have created the most robust and extensive database on organized crime in the Americas. Policymakers, NGOs, journalists, academics, students, risk analysts, businesses, asylum lawyers, and many, many others use our work constantly. To give you just one indication of our reach and impact, our work is cited and/or reproduced at least 150 times per month on average by media, blogs, academic journals, think tanks, etc. While the website is at the core of our work, we have an additional 8 to 12 projects at any one time. These can be thematic projects (e.g., environmental crime in Colombia), geographic projects (e.g., criminal dynamics in Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay), country-specific projects (e.g., non-state criminal actors in Venezuela), hyper-focused diagnostics (e.g., criminal dynamics in the open-air markets in San Miguel, El Salvador), or theme-based journalistic projects (e.g., gender and organized crime in the Northern Triangle and the Andes).
