IPNO frees innocent people sentenced to life in prison and those serving unjust sentences. We recognize the root causes of wrongful convictions and unjust sentences as systemic racism and inequities. We work to expose and address these root causes by sharing our clients’ stories in court, the legislature, the community and the media. We support our clients living well and fully in the world after their release.

DURING 2018, IPNO FREED TWO INNOCENT CLIENTS. MALCOLM ALEXANDER WAS EXONERATED AFTER SERVING 37 YEARS, 11 MONTHS AND 22 DAYS IN PRISON. GERALD MANNING WAS FREED AFTER SERVING 40 YEARS, 10 MONTHS AND 10 DAYS IN PRISON.IN 2018, IPNO PROVIDED WRAPAROUND RE-ENTRY SUPPORT TO 26 FREED CLIENTS LIVING IN LOUISIANA, TEXAS MISSISSIPPI AND GEORGIA. SUPPORT IS PROVIDED IN EVERY ASPECT OF THEIR TRANSITION TO LIFE OUTSIDE OF PRISON. IPNO UTILIZES A NEEDS ASSESSMENT AND SERVICES PRIORITIZATION SYSTEM TO ENSURE APPROPRIATE AND SUFFICIENT ATTENTION AND CARE ARE BEING PROVIDED TO EVERY CLIENT. THIS INCLUDES WINNING COMPENSATION FOR ALL ELIGIBLE EXNOEREES WHICH TOTALS $321,386.73.IPNO CONDUCTS EDUCATIONAL CAMPAIGNS ON CAUSES OR WRONGFUL CONVICTIONS AND HOW TO PREVENT THEM. IN 2018, IPNO LED A TRAINING FOR 30 NOPD DETECTIVE. A LEADING CAUSE OF WRONGFUL CONVICTION IS EYEWITNESS IDENTIFICATION. IPNO CONTINUES TO EDUCATE COMMUNITY MEMBERS, LEADERS, AND DECISION MAKERS HOW LAW ENFORCEMENT CAN DECREASE THE RISK OF MISIDENTIFICATION BY USING EVIDENCE BASED, BEST PRACTICES WHEN CONDUCTING EYEWITNESS IDENTIFICATION PROCEDURES. IPNO ALSO SUPPORTED A SUCCESSFUL LEGISLATIVE CAMPAIGN TO REFORM PROCEDURES FOR OBTAINING EYEWITNESS IDENTIFICATIONS, AND CONTRIBUTED TO A SUCCESSFUL STATEWIDE CAMPAIGN TO END NON-UNANIMOUS JURIES IN FELONY TRIALS.
