About
UNITED WAY'S COMMUNITY INVESTMENT PROCESS FUNDS PROGRAMS THAT IMPROVE CONDITIONS FOR INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES. ALL PROGRAMS MUST ADDRESS ONE OF UNITED WAY'S FOUR PRIORITY AREAS: BASIC NEEDS (FOOD, SHELTER, CLOTHING); INCOME (HAVING ENOUGH MONEY TO PAY FOR TODAY'S NECESSITIES AND SAVE A LITTLE FOR TOMORROW); EDUCATION (SUPPORTING CHILDREN AND YOUTH AND ENSURING THEY GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL ON TIME, READY FOR COLLEGE OR TO JOIN THE WORKFORCE); AND HEALTH (ENSURING CHILDREN AND ADULTS ARE HEALTHY AND ABLE TO BE PRODUCTIVE AT SCHOOL AND/OR WORK). WE BELIEVE THESE FOUR PRIORITY AREAS ARE THE BUILDING BLOCKS FOR A GOOD LIFE. THROUGH THE GENEROUS CONTRIBUTIONS OF LOCAL DONORS, WE FUND LOCAL PROGRAMS THAT PROMOTE COLLABORATION, EFFICIENCY, INNOVATION AND ACCOUNTABILITY. WE INVEST IN PROGRAMS THAT PROVE THEY MEET A NEED, ACHIEVE RESULTS, AND ARE GOOD STEWARDS OF RESOURCES. WE LEAD AND SUPPORT PARTNERSHIPS AND COLLABORATIONS TO SOLVE SHARED COMMUNITY CHALLEGNES. FOR THE MOST RECENT FISCAL YEAR, UNITED WAY HAD 28 COMMUNITY PARTNERS AND FUNDED 56 PROGRAMS.THE PROGRAMS FUNDED BY UNITED WAY SERVED MORE THAN 100,000 PERSONS IN THE CHATTAHOOCHEE VALLEY. BELOW ARE SEVERAL SELECTED OUTCOMES THAT DEMONSTRATE THE RESULTS ACHIEVED THROUGH INVESTING IN UNITED WAY:-9,536 FAMILIES/CAREGIVERS WERE PROVIDED INFORMATION, RESOURCES, TOOLS, TRAININGS, AND/OR TEACHING SKILLS TO IMPROVE CHILDHOOD SUCCESS.-5,790 SCHOOL-AGED YOUTH RECEIVED JOB SKILLS TRAINING TO COMPLEMENT THEIR EDUCATION AND IMPROVE JOB READINESS SKILLS.-3,450 YOUTH, OR 84% OF YOUTH PARTICIPATING IN A UNITED WAY FUNDED AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM, ADOPTED HEALTHY BEHAVIORS SUCH AS EATING BETTER, INCREASING OR MAINTAINING REGULAR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, AN/OR MOVING TOWARD A HEALTHY WEIGHT.-597 CHILDREN WHO HAVE BEEN PHYSICALLY AND/OR SEXUALLY ABUSED RECEIVED SUPPORTIVE SERVICES THAT DECREASED THE TRAUMA EXPERIENCED BY THE CHILD VICTIM AND IMPROVED THEIR PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL HEALTH.- EACH WEEKDAY, OVER 1,800 CHILDREN RECEIVE A HOT, NUTRITIOUS MEAL AFTER SCHOOL IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD. ON FRIDAYS, 1,500 OF THE MOST CHRONICALLY HUNGRY CHILDREN GO HOME WITH A BACKPACK FULL OF FOOD TO PROVIDE THE NOURISHMENT THEY NEED OVER THE WEEKEND. DURING THE SUMMER, AN ADDITIONAL 900 CHILDREN RECEIVE A HOT MEAL EACH DAY. THESE PROGRAMS HELP TO SATISFY THE BASIC NUTRITIONAL NEEDS OF CHILDREN AND YOUTH, ALLOWING THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO THRIVE ACADEMICALLY AND SOCIALLY.- AN INDEPENDENT AND ON-GOING STUDY THROUGH THE BUTLER CENTER AT CSU OF THREE UNITED WAY FUNDED AFTER-SCHOOL AND SUMMER PROGRAMS DEMONSTRATES THAT PROGRAM EFFECTIVENESS INCREASES FOR STUDENTS THAT ATTEND YEAR-OVER-YEAR, ALLOWING STUDENTS TO CATCH UP FASTER AND EVEN SURPASS THEIR NON-PROGRAM PEERS.
