EDUCATION & STEWARDSHIP THE DAN RIVER BASIN ASSOCIATION (DRBA) STAFF WAS INVITED TO SERVE ON THE BOARD OF THE VIRGINIA ASSOCIATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION (VAEE) IN 2018 AND PRESENTED AT THE VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE STEM CONFERENCE. DRBA'S ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION (EE) PROGRAMS REACHED MORE THAN 4,000 STUDENTS DURING THE YEAR WITH HANDS-ON ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION INCLUDING 500 STUDENTS FROM PATRICK COUNTY, FRANKLIN COUNTY, AND MARTINSVILLE CITY SCHOOLS WHO PLANTED MORE THAN 200 TREES AS A RESULT OF DRBA'S STREAMSIDE TREES IN THE CLASSROOM (STIC) PROGRAM. DRBA ALSO PARTNERED TO LAUNCHED THE FIRST FLOATING CLASSROOM PROJECT WITH FRANKLIN COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND THE FIRST GREEN SCHOOLYARD WITH ALBERT HARRIS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. IN ADDITION, DRBA OFFERED EE PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES TO OVER 200 DISADVANTAGED AND UNDERSERVED YOUTH IN PARTNERSHIP WITH MHC AFTER 3. DRBA ALSO HELD ITS 3RD ANNUAL FOREST SCHOOL PROGRAM AT PHILPOTT LAKE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS AND VIRGINIA MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY AND A SUMMER RIVER SERIES PROGRAM IN WESTERN ROCKINGHAM COUNTY. SINCE THE COAL ASH SPILL ON THE DAN RIVER IN 2014, DRBA CONTINUED ITS COMMITMENT TO STEWARDSHIP EFFORTS IN MONITORING WATER QUALITY AND PROVIDING EDUCATION TO THE PUBLIC. DRBA TRAINED AND SUPPORTED VOLUNTEERS IN ITS CITIZEN WATER QUALITY MONITORING PROGRAM WHICH NOW COVERS 50 MONITORING SITES ON THE DAN, SMITH, AND MAYO RIVERS. IN 2018, DRBA PRESENTED TO 15 CIVIC AND SCHOOL GROUPS ABOUT THE CURRENT STATE OF THE DAN RIVER AND STRATEGIES THE ORGANIZATION IS DOING TO ENSURE THAT MONITORING AND WATER QUALITY MONITORING CONTINUES. DRBA ALSO HOSTED 2 CITIZEN WATER QUALITY MONITORING TRAININGS AND ITS CITIZEN WATER QUALITY MONITORING (CWQM) PROGRAM ADDED 5 NEW CWQM VOLUNTEERS. DRBA CONTINUES TO OFFER ITS KIDS4RIVERS, RAIN BARREL WORKSHOP SERIES, WATER PROTECTOR CERTIFICATION, STORM DRAIN MARKING, RIVER WATCH, CLEANUP CREW AND THE RIPARIAN BUFFER PROGRAMS TO INSPIRE STEWARDSHIP IN THE REGION. DRBA COORDINATED A DOZEN CLEANUPS INVOLVING ALMOST 300 VOLUNTEERS TO CLEAN UP ABOUT 185 MILES OF RIVERS AND STREAMS IN 2018. DRBA ALSO CONTINUED TO INVEST RESOURCES IN EDUCATING THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE ISSUES RELATED TO HYDRAULIC FRACTURING, URANIUM MINING, COAL ASH WASTE, PIPELINE DEVELOPMENT, FORESTRY BEST PRACTICES AND LITTERING.
