UNITED WAY OF ROANOKE VALLEY IS A UNIQUE ASSET TO OUR COMMUNITY. UW ENGAGES LOCAL BUSINESSES, NONPROFITS AND INDIVIDUALS TO DETERMINE AND PRIORITIZE OUR REGION'S MOST PRESSING NEEDS. A COMMITTED NETWORK OF COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS DETERMINES WHICH PROGRAMS MAKE THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE IN ADDRESSING THESE NEEDS. FROM JULY 1, 2017 - JUNE 30, 2018, UNITED WAY OF ROANOKE VALLEY INVESTED OVER $2.1 MILLION DOLLARS IN QUALITY PROGRAMS, INITIATIVES, AND SMALL GRANTS THAT MAKE A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE IN THE COMMUNITY. $1.1 MILLION CAME FROM GIFTS TO THE COMMUNITY IMPACT FUND, AND $1 MILLION CAME IN THE FORM OF GRANTS SPECIFICALLY AWARDED TO DIRECTLY SUPPORT UNITED WAY'S SIGNATURE INITIATIVES - SMART BEGINNINGS, BANK ON, HEALTHY ROANOKE VALLEY, REHOUSING YOUTH FOR SUCCESS IN EDUCATION (RYSE), AND HEALTHY FRANKLIN COUNTY. ADDITIONALLY, UNITED WAY MADE INVESTMENTS IN THE WORK OF OTHER NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS PROVIDING SERVICES WHICH ADDRESSED KEY PRIORITIES IDENTIFIED IN THE AREAS OF EDUCATION, INCOME AND HEALTH. IN 2017 - 2018 FY, UWRV MADE INVESTMENTS TOTALING $277,667 (37% OF THE TOTAL) IN 9 PROGRAMS THAT WERE ALIGNED TO OUR EDUCATION OBJECTIVES OF PROVIDING ACCESS TO QUALITY, AFFORDABLE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH AGES 0 TO 18; EMPOWERING PARENTS TO SERVE AS THEIR CHILD'S FIRST TEACHER; AND EMPOWERING YOUTH TO READ AT GRADE LEVEL AND GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL ON TIME. THROUGH OUR FUNDED PARTNERS AND OUR INITIATIVES, OVER 1,600 CHILDREN ENTERED KINDERGARTEN READY TO LEARN; 648 YOUTH CONNECTED WITH CARING ADULTS AT OUT-OF-SCHOOL TIME PROGRAMS TO MAKE SURE THEY STAYED ON THE PATH TOWARDS GRADUATION. ADDITIONALLY, UWRV MADE INVESTMENTS TOTALING $254,573 (34% OF THE TOTAL) IN 13 PROGRAMS THAT WERE ALIGNED TO OUR HEALTH OBJECTIVES OF PROMOTING HEALTHY LIVING AND LIFESTYLE CHOICES; PROVIDING ACCESSIBLE AND AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE SERVICES; AND, PROVIDING CRISIS AND INTERVENTION SERVICES FOR THOSE IN NEED. THOUGH OUR FUNDED PARTNERS AND INITIATIVES, 1,789 INDIVIDUALS ACCESSED MEDICAL, DENTAL, AND MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES; AND OVER HALF A MILLION DOLLARS WAS SAVED ON COSTLY PRESCRIPTIONSEITH APPROXIMATELY 6,000 PEOPLE RECEIVING ASSISTANCE WITH LIFE SUSTAINING MEDICINES. FINALLY, UWRV MADE INVESTMENTS TOTALING $217,069 (29% OF THE TOTAL) IN 8 PROGRAMS THAT WERE ALIGNED TO OUR INCOME OBJECTIONS OF ASSISTING INDIVIDUALS WITH ACCESS TO EMPLOYMENT AND OTHER ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES; PROVIDING FINANCIAL EDUCATION AND IMPROVING THE ABILITY OF INDIVIDUALS TO MANAGE THEIR PERSONAL FINANCES; AND ASSISTING IN CRISIS INTERVENTION AND SUPPORT IN MEETING BASIC NEEDS. THROUGH OUR INITIATIVES AND OUR FUNDED PARTNERS, 460 RESIDENTS RECEIVED FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR PERMANENT HOUSING AND UTILITIES; 971 TAX FORMS WERE FILED, RETURNING $1.3 MILLION TO LOW- AND MODERATE-INCOME FAMILIES.
