Mission

The Peace Appeal works to catalyze social change processes to lay the groundwork for sustainable, just peace. To this end we collaborate with individuals, groups and institutions both to prevent and transform violent conflict and to ameliorate its worst effects among affected populations, particularly children. Our efforts begin with invitations from local stakeholders, to whom we offer sustained partnership, usually including facilitation, advisory services and other forms of direct support. Our commitment to these local stakeholders is long term. Over the life of our engagement we assist them in building partner and donor networks that include other global as well as national supporting institutions. Much of our advisory work focuses on aiding local stakeholders in the design and implementation of their own peace and dialogue processes, and the supporting knowledge sharing systems and frameworks that enable stakeholders to use dialogue to build consensus on difficult and divisive.

About

In the past fiscal year, the Peace Appeal worked with local and international partners supporting peacebuilding initiatives in multiple countries, including Cyprus, Lebanon, Myanmar, Syria, the United States and Zimbabwe. The range of assistance we provide our partners includes facilitation and advisory services, financial support, access to research and information services, support for resource mobilization efforts from international donors, as well as support for education and policy advocacy. Much of our assistance is directed towards nationally led peace and dialogue processes. These are generally long-term initiatives where progress to overarching goals may be measured over years, comparable to efforts to change policy in more stable societies, but which nonetheless can see contributions to more targeted objectives in shorter time horizons. Among the highlights of the past year are: Zimbabwe: Through small grants and technical support, we have assisted our Zimbabwe partner, the Zimbabwe Council of Churches in its successful efforts to convene the National Envisioning Platform and the National People's Convention in Harare, which attracted 4,000 participants. The National People's Convention held subsequent regional gatherings in the wake of President Robert Mugabe's ouster. These gatherings convened participants from civil society, residency associations, labor groups and churches to begin a process of simulating public discussion and action for a reform agenda for the country in advance of this past July's elections. Cyprus: Our support to the Cyprus Dialogue Forum ('CDF') included assisting its secretariat in the development of their knowledge sharing platform for their membership of leaders from islands political, business, and civil society communities who meet regularly to discuss issues across 5 thematic portfolios. The Peace Appeal also provided technical assistance in the form of regular facilitation and consulting on the Cyprus Dialogue Forum's development, including assessing the formal Track 1 dialogue and its failures, and generating new options for discussion on the critical issue of how to address the requirements of the 'Guarantors' of Cypriot security. Additionally our support has been directed to assist CDF's resource mobilization efforts to secure future funding, and facilitating both the fundraising and program development efforts of the Families of the Missing Group. Lebanon/Syria: Our assistance to the Common Space Initiative ('CSI') included both financial support and technical advice in service of the peace and dialogue efforts of the CSI, and the humanitarian assistance needs of populations affected by the conflict. The former included support to the Lebanese-Palestinian dialogue, the publication of a major research paper on the policies affecting UNRWA, the launch of a research effort to understand the US, Israel, Saudi and Egypt supported Middle East peace efforts, the development of a new political dialogue focusing on the impact of Syrian refugees in Lebanon, and support to meetings of regional UN officials on security issues. Our support to the Children's Initiative is directed to humanitarian efforts under the umbrella of the CSI. This year's support included small grants to 8 initiatives supporting Syrian refugee children, most focusing on psycho-social support. These have included grants to children's theater and artwork initiatives in camps and support to the publication of children's books in Arabic from other cultures around the world. United States: We continue to work with partners such as the Charity and Security Network ('CSN') and the Alliance for Peacebuilding to improve the enabling environment for peacebuilding and humanitarian relief organizations, particularly addressing the increasing challenge facing nonprofit institutions working internationally known as 'derisking' in our banking system. Additionally we have initiated and supported a number of educational projects to promote awareness of peacebuilding initiatives both domestically and internationally, with a particular focus on displaced populations.
