Mission

The mission of the YMCA at Virgnia Tech is building community through learning, leadership, and service. Founded in 1873, the Y has provided volunteer opportunities for students while also working with the community on their every changing needs. We work with the international community to provide ESL classes and make them comfortable living in the United States. We run a Thrift Shop that not only is a great recycling model, but it also redonates approximately 10% of incoming goods to other community groups to provide to families in need. Additionally we operate several anti-hunger initiatives – in partnership with Feeding America Southwest Virginia and the USDA including pop-up food sites over the summer at two mobile home communities whose demographics point to poverty.

About

Thrift Shops: promote regional sustainability programs for re-used / re-purposed items, recycling, and textiled goods while also providing low-cost shopping alternatives for needed products.
