Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater, under the leadership of Artistic Director Molly Smith and Executive Producer Edgar Dobie, is a national center dedicated to American voices and artists. Arena Stage produces plays of all that is passionate, profound, deep and dangerous in the American spirit, and presents diverse and ground-breaking work from some of the finest artists around the country. Arena Stage is committed to commissioning and developing new plays and impacts the lives of more than 10,000 students annually through its work in community engagement. Now in its seventh decade, the theater serves a diverse annual audience of more than 300,000.

THE 2017-2018 SEASON WAS ARENA STAGE'S 68TH YEAR IN OPERATION, AND EIGHTH YEAR IN THE NEWLY CONSTRUCTED MEAD CENTER FOR AMERICAN THEATER. ARENA STAGE IS ALIVE AS A CENTER FOR AMERICAN THEATER IN OUR NATION'S CAPITAL WITH PRODUCTIONS, DIVERSE AND INNOVATIVE WORKS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY AND THE NURTURING OF NEW PLAYS. IN THIS SEASON, ARENA PRODUCED TEN SHOWS AND HOSTED DOZENS OF PUBLIC PLAY READINGS, PERFORMANCES, AND SPECIAL EVENTS. THE SEASON OPENED IN THE KREEGER THEATER WITH THE RETURN OF JOHN STRAND'S 2015 SMASH-HIT POLITICAL DRAMA THE ORIGINALIST, FEATURING ACCLAIMED D.C. ACTOR EDWARD GERO, REPRISING HIS ROLE AS SUPREME COURT JUSTICE ANTONIN SCALIA. THE NEXT SHOW IN THE KREEGER WAS KAREN ZACARAS' HOT-BUTTON COMEDY NATIVE GARDENS. NEXT UP WAS A CLASSIC DRAMA, THE PRICE BY ARTHUR MILLER, IN THE ROBERT AND ARLENE KOGOD CRADLE DIRECTED BY ARENA STAGE DEPUTY ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, SEEMA SUEKO. OUR HOLIDAY SEASON KICKED OFF WITH A PRODUCTION OF THE PAJAMA GAME, BOOK BY GEORGE ABBOTT AND RICHARD BISSELL, MUSIC AND LYRICS BY RICHARD ADLER AND JERRY ROSS, IN THE FICHANDLER STAGE, DIRECTED BY ALAN PAUL. ALONGSIDE, THE PAJAMA GAME, IN THE KREEGER THEATER WAS NINA SIMONE: FOUR WOMEN BY CHRISTINA HAM. NEXT, ARENA STAGE WELCOMED THE NEW YEAR IN THE KREEGER THEATER WITH MARY KATHRYN NAGLE'S WORLD-PREMIERE DRAMA SOVEREIGNTY, DIRECTED BY MOLLY SMITH, AS THE FOURTH POWER PLAY IN ARENA STAGE'S AMBITIOUS INITIATIVE TO COMMISSION 25 NEW WORKS OVER 10 YEARS, FOCUSED ON STORIES OF POLITICS AND POWER. THIS WAS FOLLOWED ON THE FICHANDLER STAGE WITH THE GREAT SOCIETY, IN WHICH JACK WILLIS REPRISES HIS PERFORMANCE AS PRESIDENT LYNDON B. JOHNSON AND REUNITES WITH DIRECTOR KYLE DONNELLY IN THIS D.C. PREMIERE. THE SEASON CONTINUED WITH JEANNE SAKATA'S HOLD THESE TRUTHS, DIRECTED BY JESSICA KUBZANSKY, WHICH TELLS THE TRUE STORY OF GORDON HIRABAYASHI, THE SON OF JAPANESE IMMIGRANTS WHO DEFIED A COURT ORDER WHEN AMERICA PUT ITS OWN CITIZENS INTO INTERNMENT CAMP. NEXT ON THE FICHANDLER STAGE WAS THE SECOND CLASSIC DRAMA OF THE SEASON, TWO TRAINS RUNNING BY AUGUST WILSON, AND DIRECTED BY JULIETTE CARRILLO. THE SEASON CULMINATED IN THE KREEGER THEATER WITH THE WORLD-PREMIERE MUSICAL SNOW CHILD BASED ON THE NOVEL BY EOWYN IVEY, WITH BOOK BY JOHN STRAND, MUSIC BY BOB BANGHART AND GEORGIA STITT, LYRICS BY GEORGIA STITT, AND DIRECTED BY MOLLY SMITH.VOICES OF NOW, IN ITS 15TH YEAR, CONTINUES TO BE A FORCE FOR EDUCATION IN THE COMMUNITY. IN THE FALL, VOICES OF NOW WORKSHOPS REACHED NEARLY 600 STUDENTS THROUGH PARTNERING D.C. AND VIRGINIA SCHOOLS. NINE DIFFERENT YOUTH ENSEMBLES PRESENTED THEIR ORIGINAL WORK OVER THE COURSE OF FOUR EVENINGS, IN THE 8TH ANNUAL VOICES OF NOW FESTIVAL, WHICH WAS PERFORMED BY CLOSE TO ONE HUNDRED STUDENTS. THE PLAYS EXPLORED TOPICS INCLUDING SAFETY IN SCHOOLS, GUN LAW REFORM, COLONIALISM, MULTI-CULTURALISM, GRIEF AND THE EXPERIENCE OF LOSING A LOVED ONE. THROUGH THE D.C. TICKET PARTNERSHIP, ARENA WELCOMED 1,500 D.C. PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS TO THE THEATER, BY PROVIDING $4 THEATER TICKETS. THROUGH THE FELLOWSHIP AND INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS, ARENA STAGE FOSTERED 5 INTERNS AND 15 FELLOWS. ADDITIONALLY, ARENA HIRED 3 FELLOWS INTO FULLTIME POSITIONS. THE ACTORS ARENA WORKSHOPS GREW TO 200 MEMBERS THIS SEASON, ALL PARTICIPATING IN VARIOUS WORKSHOPS FOR DEDICATED, EXPERIENCED, AND PROFESSIONAL ACTORS. TWENTY-SEVEN WORKSHOPS WERE HELD FOR STUDENTS AGES 4, 5, AND 6 IN PART OF ARENA'S LITERACY THROUGH DRAMATIC PLAY PROGRAM, MOVING STORIES: LITERACY THROUGH DRAMA. FINALLY, CAMP ARENA STAGE AND ARENA STAGE ACADEMY REACHED WELL OVER 300 STUDENTS THIS SUMMER.
