AFAvH provides service to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) to support and secure the future of an active US Humboldt Alumni Network, engaging over 5,400 US researchers and professionals in intellectual and professional exchanges. In 2018 AFAvH: (i) completed 54 Board-led meetings or calls with US Humboldt alumni to discuss the impact of the Humboldt experience and alumni interests, (ii) hosted a dinner for 20 US Humboldt alumni at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, (iii) with the AvH, planned a joint alumni conference with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) held in Atlanta, GA to mark the launch of the "Germany Year" in the United States, (iv) organized an alumni reception at Georgia Tech and Emory Universities, (v) engaged over 65 German and North American "research alumni" of Kiel University and of the Technical University of Berlin at conferences in Halifax, Canada and New York City, respectively, (vi) advised US alumni organizing AvH "Kollegs", (vii) assisted the German Consulate in San Francisco in outreach to 500+ alumni in the Bay Area, (vii) with the AvH, the German Academic International Network (GAIN) and German Embassy, planned activities at the annual GAIN meeting of over 400 researchers, government officials, and science funders in Boston, (viii) planned a 5- year Board-led engagement initiative to activate the US Humboldt Alumni network and ensure its sustainability, (ix) with the AvH, coordinated planning on 2019 activities to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Alexander von Humboldt's birth, (x) advertised research fellowships and awards in webinars, distributed information through email and social media, and participated in 6 professional or scientific meetings, providing 325 individual consultations to potential applicants, and (xi) presented information on German research opportunities during campus visits in Wisconsin, Georgia and Massachusetts.
