About this organization
Mission
Cancer Commons network of cancer patients, physicians, scientists, volunteers, and partners connect and leverage the world's best cancer knowledge and resources to help patients and their physicians make informed treatment decisions.
About
Cancer Commons provides patient services through its Ask Cancer Commons platform, and through patient content (news, blogs, etc.). Ask Cancer Commons is a web-based service that connects patients with knowledgeable experts in our network, who provide the patients with personalized treatment options, including referrals to top local physicians and to clinical trials. The treatment recommendations and the reasoning that supports them are captured in a registry, along with the patient's clinical history and results. Each case builds on this collective knowledge, enabling more accurate, personalized options for the next community member. Moreover, by continuously learning from the experiences of every participating patient and physician, and immediately applying that knowledge to inform treatment decisions, the Cancer Commons network can explore and optimize the use of available therapies, off-label and in multi-drug therapeutic regimens, far more efficiently than traditional trials. This year, we quadrupled the capacity of our Ask Cancer Commons service. To date, we have helped several thousand patients, throughout the US and in 43 other countries, with all forms of cancer, find new options and hope, and rest assured that no stone has been left unturned. The service is free, made possible by philanthropic support. Demand continues to build, driven almost exclusively by patient referrals on social media, and is now straining the capacity of our current, mostly manual processes. Cancer Commons also develops original patient content and curates third-party publications, news, blog posts, and resources to educate patients and physicians about the latest scientific and clinical findings. This content is made available through our website as well as through social media. In 2016-17, over 3,000 cancer treatment insights and alerts to trials, drug approvals and other actionable developments were generated and disseminated. Patients can also share their clinical data and personal experiences to help other patients learn what patients like them did, how well the treatments worked, and what might be expected during and after treatment.
