Turning Green is a global student-led movement devoted to cultivating a healthy, just and thriving planet through education and advocacy around environmentally sustainable and socially responsible choices. We educate, empower, and mobilize a global network of elementary, middle, high school, college and graduate students to become visionary catalysts for sustainable change in their lives, school campuses, and local communities. Turning Green programs mobilize youth around climate justice, environmental sustainability and public health. THE CONSCIOUS KITCHEN PROGRAM PARTNERS WITH SCHOOLS, GUIDING THEM TO IMPLEMENT FOOD PROGRAMS BASED ON FIVE FOUNDATIONAL PRINCIPLES: FRESH, LOCAL, ORGANIC, SEASONAL AND NON-GMO (FLOSN). THE CONSCIOUS KITCHEN PROGAM AT BAYSIDE MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. ACADEMY IN MARIN CITY AND WILLOW CREEK ACADEMY IN SAUSALITO ARE THE FIRST ORGANIC NON-GMO SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN THE COUNTRY. THE CONSCIOUS KITCHEN HAS TRANSFORMED SCHOOL CULTURE IN THE DINING HALL AND BEYOND. TEACHERS HAVE REPORTED INCREASED LEADERSHIP QUALITIES EXHIBITED BY STUDENTS; IMPROVED ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE; A DECREASE IN DISCIPLINARY CASES; AND AN INCREASE IN ATTENDANCE. DURING 2018/2019 SCHOOL YEAR, CK SCHOOLS SERVED APPROXIMATELY 1,220 SCRATCH COOKED, FRESH, LOCAL, ORGANIC MEALS PER DAY WITH DEMONSTRATED IMPACTS AND LAUNCHED A STUDY WITH UCSF FAMILY HEALTH OUTCOMES PROJECT. IN 2018, CK ENTERED INTO A 6 MONTH PARTNERSHIP WITH COMMUNITY ACTION MARIN (CAM) TO ASSESS THE CAM FOOD PROGRAM, AND TO OUTLINE RECOMMENDATIONS ALIGNED WITH CK'S MISSION. THE PROJECT CULMINATED WITH A REPORT CAPTURING CK'S ANALYSIS OF THE CURRENT PROGRAM ALONG WITH RECOMMENDATINS FOR CAM'S FOOD PROGRAM GOING FORWARD. CK'S REPORT PRESENTRD AN ASESSMENT OF HUNGER IN MARIN COUNTY, ALONG WITH A THOROUGH LOOK AT THE CONSEQUECES OF POOR INGREDIENTS AND TOXICANTS OFTEN FOUND IN TRADITIONAL SCHOOL FOOD AND EXAMINATION OF THE ENTIRE CAM FOOD PROGRAM, OFFERING RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT, INCLUDING A ROADMAP FOR IMPLEMENTING THAT VISION. ADDITIONALLY, CK PARTNERED WITH CLOVER SONOMA TO PROJECT MANAGE AND EXECUTE A CK JUNIOR COOKING CHALLENGE AT MCKINLEY TK-8 SCHOOL IN PETALUMA. THE GOAL OF THE CHALLENGE WAS TO INFORM AND INSPIRE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND THE IMPACT OF FRESH, LOCAL, ORGANIC FOOD ON HEALTH, CLIMATE, AGRICULTURAL SYSTEMS, ECOSYSTEMS, AND COMMUNITIES, THE CHALLENGE CULMINATED WITH STUDENTS TEAMS, PAIRED WITH LOCAL FARM-TO-TABLE CHEF'S, WHO WERE TASKED WITH CREATING A FRESH, LOCAL, ORGANIC MEAL THAT COULD BE SERVED IN A SCHOOL SETTING AT AN EVENT HELD AT THE CULINARY INSTITUTE IN NAPA.
