About

The Core Programs of About Special Kids include:Peer Support and Care Coordination: Because ASK staff are parents of Children and Youth Special with Special Health Care Needs themselves, peer support naturally occurs. Parent Liaisons identify themselves as having children with special needs and are able to develop a trusting relationship with a parent because of their shared roles. ASK also uses Parent Mentors (volunteers) who are matched by location or by special needs. The purpose is to address the emotional needs of the parent. Parent Mentors are trained via online training and questionnaires, and screened by the Director of Family Support. During 2017 ASK reached 1,624 families and professionals throughout the state with our peer support and care coordination program. We also recruited and/or engaged more than 70 volunteers to deepen our efforts around the state. We also attended clinical case conference in three Eskenazi clinics as part of the support team for families. We attended 99 case conferences in 2017, providing assistance to 543 families, 141 of these were provided additional care coordination through ASK.Information: In 1994, ASK received a grant to develop a central directory for First Steps Early Intervention System (Part C). After significant upgrades, this database is available on ASKs website and includes more than 2,100 entries. ASK also provides families information packets on specific topics as well as information found on ASKs website (www.aboutspecialkids.org) which includes ASK publications and links. More than 2,224 packets of information were sent to families and professionals around the state during 2017.Education and Training: ASKs on-site trainings include: Roadmap to Special Education: Laws and Process, Public Health Insurance: What You Dont Know Can Cost You, My Child Has Special Needs: Now What?, What Every Parent Wants You To Know, Its Not What You Say, But How You Say It, My Child is Transition to Adulthood: What Now?, and a Life with Stress, Balance, and a Plan. Our on-line trainings include four different modules on Article 7 (Indianas Special Education Law)as well as three modules on Mental Health. We now have 29 different topical webinars, which are broadcast live and then recorded and posted on the ASK website (www.aboutspecialkids.org)as well as five application videos taking families step by step through how to complete an application. We served more than 130 families and professionals through our face-to-face education and training programs during 2017.
