Mission

New Leash on Life USA’s mission is to reduce recidivism and save the lives of at-risk dogs. We accomplish this with an innovative reform model that leverages the powerful bond between dogs and humans. New Leash’s model begins during incarceration with a dog training program that teaches practical life and social-emotional skills, and extends to high-quality case management upon release. Through this comprehensive approach, we prepare men and women for a successful transition as they re-enter society.

About

New Leash on Life USA rescues dogs from shelters and takes them to prisons to love and be trained by inmates for 3 months. Job readiness and life skills workshops are provided for the inmates as well as internships upon parole and New Leash on Life finds good homes for the dogs. Currently, the one year recidivism rate for New Leash graduates is 7.14%, compared to the 33% one year recidivism rate of the general prison population in Philadelphia. Since the program started in August 2011, New Leash on Life USA has rescued and adopted 222 dogs and 307 inmates have graduated from the program, with 87 employed fulltime.
