In 2018 VVFRC was successful in winning a challenge of the City of Hesperias discriminatory Housing ordinances. This challenge changed Fair Housing laws nationally to provide protection of critical housing to those exiting incarceration into homelessness. The agency feels that releasing them without securing basic needs, creates an unsafe environment within our communities. This also increases recidivism and continues overcrowding within the prison system. Although awaiting the results of the challenge had a negative impact on the agencys finances, we were still providing 64,215 shelter nights, 76,128 meals, Case Management and supportive services to 694 unduplicated San Bernardino County homeless individuals and families. We have a 6% recidivism rate compared to the State of Californias 61% rate. More than 80% of those exiting our program have exited into permanent housing with a sustainable income.
