Mission

Use digital technologies to preserve and provide access to historical source materials, especially ancient and medieval manuscripts and rare books.

About

EMEL pursued its core mission in projects that used scientific imaging technologies to recover illegible texts in ancient and medieval manuscripts and to digitally photograph an endangered manuscript library for preservation and access. Began new project with St. Catherines Monastery of the Sinai, Egypt, to digitally photograph its extensive manuscript library, beginning with its Arabic and Syriac manuscripts. The Monastery holds the worlds oldest continually operating library, and it is endangered due to the presence of ISIS on the Sinai Peninsula. As part of this new project, EMEL installed four digitization work stations at the Monastery, recruited and trained camera operators, and undertook four four-week digitization sessions onsite in the Sinai (Egypt). Conducted project with Cambridge University Library, U.K., to spectrally image a palimpsest, the erased layer of which preserves the oldest New Testament manuscript to include comments by early Christian authors alongside the biblical text (July 2018). Continued processing of spectral data for a project with the Ambrosiana Library of Milan, Italy, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Processing of spectral data captured in 2017 led to the recovery of texts that were erased and overwritten some 1,000 years ago. They included a 5th century copy of the Book of Jubilees, the only surviving copy of the Testament of Moses (both ancient Jewish texts) and the only surviving copy of an ancient Christian commentary on the Gospel of Luke. Conducted a meeting of scholars and scientists at Tyndale House in Cambridge, U.K., to interpret the results of a project with the Museum of the Bible, Oklahoma City, that used multi-spectral imaging to recover ancient texts of the Bible and ancient Greek classics that were erased and overwritten in the 9th century (May 2018). Organized a meeting of scholars and librarians in Athens, Greece, to discuss methods and standards for cataloging Arabic and Syriac manuscripts (September 2018). Visited the Vatican Library to discuss potential future collaboration (November 2018). Began negotiations to create at Hellenic Heritage Imaging Center based in Athens, Greece, that will facilitate the development of imaging projects in Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean. The proposed imaging center will include Greek and U.S. participating institutions. Gave educational presentations of the work of EMEL at churches and to scholars and students at conferences. Conference presentations included: the keynote address for a conference on cultural heritage preservation at the University of Rochester (March 2018); multiple presentations during a conference on palimpsest manuscripts in Vienna (April 2018); presentation on palimpsest imaging at conference on digital humanities in Hamburg, Germany (June 2018); presentation at a conference on visual heritage in Vienna (November 2018); and a presentation on the spectral imaging of parchment manuscripts at a conference on art and archaeology in Jerusalem (December 2018).
