PROGRAM NAME: POLICY AND ADVOCACYPOLICY ADVOCACY IS ONE OF CLRJ'S CORE STRATEGIES AND PROGRAM AREAS. CLRJ EDUCATES POLICYMAKERS ON ISSUE AREAS THAT IMPACT THE 7.5 MILLION CALIFORNIA LATINAS, SERVES AS A THOUGHT LEADER AND COLLABORATOR WITH STATE AND NATIONAL ADVOCATES, TRAINS LEADERS ON THE POLICY PROCESS AND HOW TO ADVOCATE FOR THEMSELVES, AS WELL AS CONDUCTS STATE AND FEDERAL POLICY ADVOCACY TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF LATINAS/XS AND THEIR FAMILIES IN CALIFORNIA. IN 2018, CLRJ CO-SPONSORED THREE LEGISLATIVE BILLS, AND ENGAGED IN FEDERAL ADVOCACY TO SAFEGUARD CRITICAL FEDERAL PROGRAMS, AND SUPPORTED ORGANIZATIONAL PARTNERS WITH A VARIETY OF OTHER LEGISLATIVE BILLS. CLRJ'S POLICY ADVOCACY TEAM SERVED ON VARIOUS COALITIONS AND ADVISORIES AND ENGAGED FORTY-THREE (43) POLICYMAKERS EIGHTY-EIGHT TIMES (88) THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. MOST NOTABLY, CLRJ WAS SUCCESSFUL IN PASSING AB 2289, THE YOUNG PARENT'S RIGHT TO EDUCATION ACT, WHICH PROVIDES UP TO 8 WEEKS OF PARENTAL LEAVE FOR PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS IN GRADES 6-12 UPON THE BIRTH OF A CHILD. THIS WILL HELP PROTECT THE RIGHTS OF YOUNG PARENTS TO STAY IN SCHOOL WHILE THEY TAKE ADEQUATE TIME TO BOND WITH THEIR CHILDREN.
