RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES OF PITTSBURGH, INC. (RMHC) OWNS AND OPERATES THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE IN PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA. THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE, THE ORGANIZATION'S CORNERSTONE PROGRAM, PROVIDES A "HOME-AWAY-FROM-HOME" FOR FAMILIES OF CHILDREN LESS THAN 21 YEARS OF AGE BEING TREATED IN PITTSBURGH FOR CANCER, TRANSPLANTATION SURGERY AND OTHER SERIOUS ILLNESSES. A MODEST DONATION (CURRENTLY $15 PER NIGHT) IS REQUESTED AND IS WAIVED WHEN DEEMED APPROPRIATE. EXPERIENCE HAS SHOWN THAT THERE IS A GREAT NEED FOR SUCH FACILITIES, IN LIGHT OF THE WIDE GEOGRAPHICAL AREA FROM WHICH CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL OF PITTSBURGH AND OTHER LOCAL MEDICAL FACILITIES DRAW THEIR PATIENTS AND THE HIGH COST OF ACCOMMODATIONS IN THE PITTSBURGH AREA. IN ADDITION, RMHC PARTNERS WITH CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL OF PITTSBURGH OF UPMC IN THE OPERATION OF THE "CARE MOBILE" WHICH PROVIDES MEDICAL CARE AND EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN IN LOCAL UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES. RMHC BEGAN OPERATIONS IN THE LATE 1970'S WHEN THEY PURCHASED A LARGE VICTORIAN HOME IN THE SHADYSIDE SECTION OF PITTSBURGH. IN 1994 THEY PURCHASED AN APARTMENT BUILDING NEXT TO THE VICTORIAN HOME. IN NOVEMBER 2009, RMHC MOVED TO ITS NEW EXPANDED FACILITY ON THE CAMPUS OF THE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL OF PITTSBURGH OF UPMC INCREASING THE NUMBER OF LEASABLE ROOMS FROM 24 TO 59. IN 2015, RMHC EXPANDED THE NUMBER OF LEASABLE ROOMS TO 74.IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING LODGING, THE FACILITIES SERVE AS PLACES WHERE PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH SERIOUS ILLNESSES CAN DISCUSS COMMON FEARS, ANXIETIES AND PROBLEMS AND OFFER ONE ANOTHER PRACTICAL HELP AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT.RMHC REVENUES ARE USED TO PAY FOR THE ACQUISITION, RENOVATION, OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE OF THE FACILITIES IT OPERATES. RMHC HAS BEEN AND WILL BE THE RECIPIENT OF FUNDS RAISED FROM PROMOTIONS BY THE PITTSBURGH AREA MCDONALDS RESTAURANT OWNERS ASSOCIATION. ADDITIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS HAVE BEEN RECEIVED AND ARE ANTICIPATED FROM BUSINESSES, FOUNDATIONS, OTHER SOURCES AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC.
