About this organization
Mission
To promote self-confidence and healthy lifestyle choices among Los Angeles youth.
About
The foundation provides grants of state-of-the-art physical fitness equipment for a new fitness center at participating Los Angeles area schools. Additional funding is also provided for equipment maintenance, professional development for physical education teachers, and after-school supervision for up to three years. In 2018, the Sound Body Sound Mind Foundation opened new fitness centers at 10 schools in Los Angeles, across 4 school districts. Two of these districts, Long Beach Unified and Culver City Unified were new school districts for SBSM. All 10 of these schools registered improvements in student passing rates on the state mandated Fitnessgram test, along with improvements in student behaviors and perceptions surrounding physical activity, after the implementation of the SBSM program. In addition, SBSM recognized its 20th anniversary, with a celebratory dinner on UCLA's campus, concluding a multi-year fundraising campaign. As of the end of 2018, SBSM has fitness centers in 141 schools, with 127 in the Los Angeles area. The program impacts over 180,000 students annually and has reached over 750,000 students since inception.
