BGI MAINTAINED AND ENHANCED LANDSCAPING ALONG THE GREENWAY, AND ENGAGED CORPORATE AND COMMUNITY GROUPS AND THE PUBLIC IN A VARIETY OF VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES AND PUBLIC EVENTS.PUBLIC EVENTS ARE AN IMPORTANT MEANS OF ACTIVATING USE OF THE GREENWAY AND ENSURING ITS CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT AND LONG-TERM STEWARDSHIP. IN 2018 BGI PRODUCED CYCLING AND RUNNING EVENTS ALONG THE BROOKLYN WATERFRONT, INTRODUCING PARTICIPANTS TO THE GREENWAY AND THE VARIOUS PARKS AND OTHER DESTINATIONS THAT IT CONNECTS. BGI ALSO WORKED WITH AN INTERNATIONALLY-ACCLAIMED BROOKLYN-BASED SCULPTOR TO EXHIBIT AN ART INSTALLATION ON THE GREENWAY THAT REMAINED ON VIEW THROUGHOUT THE GREENWAYS BUSIEST SUMMER MONTHS.BGIS NAVAL CEMETERY LANDSCAPE (NCL), A 1.7-ACRE PUBLICLY ACCESSIBLE LANDSCAPE ALONG THE GREENWAY AT THE BROOKLYN NAVY YARD, WAS COMPLETED AND OPENED TO THE PUBLIC IN 2016. IN 2018 BGI ENGAGED LOCAL COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC THROUGH NCL OPEN HOURS, BY PROVIDING FREE PUBLIC YOGA AND MEDITATION PROGRAMS, AND BY COMMISSIONING A SITE-SPECIFIC ART INSTALLATION. MULTIPLE PROGRAM PARTNERS FURTHER ENGAGED EDUCATORS AND STUDENTS IN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CLASSES, URBAN ECOLOGY WORKSHOPS, AND YOUTH INTERNSHIPS THAT FOCUSED ON THE ECO-CULTURAL HISTORY OF THE SITE, POLLINATORS AND NATIVE PLANT HABITATS, APICULTURE, AND INVASIVE PLANT MANAGEMENT FOR A HEALTHY URBAN ECOSYSTEM. IN 2018, THE BGI BOARD OF DIRECTORS HIRED ITS FIRST EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR TO LEAD THE ORGANIZATION TO A NEW PHASE OF GROWTH AND LEADERSHIP IN WATERFRONT ACCESS AND RESILIENCY, MOBILITY, AND PUBLIC STEWARDSHIP.
