About

Residential continuum of care: We help hundreds of New York adults with special needs live with dignity in safe, comfortable, accessible housing. Hands-on support ranges from two to 24 hours per day. It includes rehabilitation, nursing, life-skills training, career training, behavioral support, and direct supervision by staff. Each residential living program at Ability Beyond has different goals and is geared towards the individual's needs and goals to foster independence and a good quality of life. Ability Beyond has a long-awaited and significant accomplishment to report about our Lewisboro, New York home. During 2018, after eleven years, three architects, and numerous attempts to gain state of New York OPWDD (Office for People with Developmental Disabilities) approval, Ability Beyond gained state and town approvals to build a new home on the property where our original home was located. The original home lacked accessibility for its current residents to freely move from the exterior to the interior and throughout the entire home without any floor transitions, obstacles or obstructions. Major renovations, which proved to be more costly than new construction had been planned since 2007. The new home was Ability Beyond's first time using a modular home contractor to build the new 8-bed home. The Lewisboro home features universal design principles that will accommodate their needs throughout the aging process and advancing acuity levels. Equitable use: The design is useful and marketable to people with diverse abilities. Flexible in use: The design accommodates a wide range of individual preferences and abilities. Simple and intuitive use: Use of the design is easy to understand, regardless of the user's experience, knowledge, language skills, or current concentration level. Perceptible information: The design communicates necessary information effectively to the user, regardless of ambient conditions or the user's sensory abilities. Tolerance for error: The design minimizes hazards and the adverse consequences of accidental or unintended actions. Low physical effort: The design can be used efficiently and comfortably with a minimum of fatigue. Size and space for approach and use: Appropriate size and space is provided for approach, reach, manipulation, and use regardless of user's body size, posture, or mobility. Our eight Lewisboro residents are enjoying their new open floor plan which allows them to easily congregate as a group without four residents having to go outside and reenter another part of the home because of obstructions as had been the case. They can see throughout the common areas, have large fully accessible bathrooms, solid surface countertops and universal design cabinetry, as well as 42 inch wide doorways. Their new home has a whole-house automatic stand-by generator, a fire sprinkler system and a full fire alarm system.
