Mission

Equality Now works for the protection and promotion of the human rights of women and girls around the world. Working with grassroots women's and human rights organizations and individual activists since 1992, Equality Now documents violence and discrimination against women and mobilizes international action to support efforts to stop these abuses.

About

In 2018, Equality Now's work led to many accomplishments and steps forward for women and girls' rights in over twenty-five countries. To support girls' right to live free from sexual violence, Equality Now and our partners filed a case against the government of Sierra Leone at the ECOWAS Court of Justice. This case challenges the discriminatory law that prevents girls from attending school while pregnant and highlights the government's failure to protect girls from sexual violence and coercion. To prevent female genital mutilation (FGM), Equality Now collaborated with partners and state officials to defend the Prohibition of FGM Act in Kenya from a constitutional petition. Our participation ensured that the case received international attention and that the arguments were grounded in international statutes, a crucial role as this case could set a precedent for the region. To help end sex trafficking, Equality Now trained police officers, judges, and other legal professionals in multiple countries on how to recognize commercial sexual exploitation, gather evidence against traffickers, and how to treat survivors with sensitivity, understanding, and compassion. To hold governments accountable, Equality Now and partners brought a case against the government of Russia to the CEDAW Committee for the government's failure to protect women from domestic violence. Equality Now is also working with grassroots partners to challenge the governments of Bolivia and Paraguay regarding their treatment of adolescent rape survivors. To support girls' empowerment, Equality Now provided financial and technical support to grassroots organizations to fund services and programs for adolescent girls. Finally, to ensure that survivors can access justice, Equality Now supported individual girls in Kenya, Paraguay, Sudan, and Malawi who are survivors of sexual violence, forced marriage, or commercial sexual exploitation by funding their education and healthcare and providing legal support for their cases.
