About this organization
Mission
The Child Center of NY began in 1953 as a children's counseling center in Queens. Today, we are a powerful community presence throughout NYC, reaching more than 35,000 children and their families each year. Our mission is to strengthen children and families with skills, opportunities, and emotional support to build healthy, successful lives. We guide children from birth to adulthood with evidence-based, innovative programs that engage them with school and help them become secure, capable, and confident. We work in five main program areas: Early childhood education (including Monday-to-Friday Head Start programs); Behavioral Health; Health Homes and Integrated care; Prevention and family support; and Youth Development (including our many after-school programs and community schools).
About
Youth development: Our youth development programs enrich young people with the tools to grow into capable and confident adults. We offer after-school and summer extended learning programs, community schools, college and work readiness programs, internships, and specialized groups that focus on issues ranging from sexual health to community service. Our in-school counseling programs overcome common barriers to mental health treatment by offering those services to young people where they are every day. We take a holistic approach: Our research-based methods help youth ages 5-24 develop cognitive, academic, social-emotional, and physical skills. We introduce them to opportunities they never knew existed, giving them hope for the future and an insight into its possibilities.
