THE KIDS' COMMUNITY DENTAL CLINIC'S (KCDC) COMBATS DENTAL DECAY IN CHILDREN EVERY DAY WITHIN THE CLINIC AND OUT A SCHOOLS THROUGH SCHOOL-LINKED PROGRAMS OFFERING FREE DENTAL SERVICES. ORIGINALLY CREATED TO FILL A CRUCIAL GAP IN ORAL HEALTH CARE SERVICES FOR CHILDREN OF LOW-INCOME WORKING FAMILIES, A DENTAL CLINIC EXISTED IN BURBANK FOR ABOUT 30 YEARS THROUGH THE GENEROSITY OF THE SISTERS OF PROVIDENCE, ST. JOSEPH MEDICAL CENTER. WHEN THE HOSPITAL DENTAL CLINIC CLOSED IN 1997, MANY PARENTS HAD A DIFFICULT TIME FINDING LOW COST DENTAL CARE. FOUR YEARS LATER, ON MAY 4, 2001, WITH SUPPORT FROM THE CITY OF BURBANK, THE DOORS WERE RE-OPENED TO THE COMMUNITY BY A PREVIOUS VOLUNTEER HYGIENIST, CAROLE NESE, FOUNDER. LOCATED ON BURBANK UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT'S MCKINLEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PROPERTY IN A LOW-INCOME NEIGHBORHOOD, THE FACILITY HAS 3 OPERATORIES AND WELCOMES CHILDREN AS PATIENTS WITH NO GEOGRAPHIC LIMITS. KCDC EFFORTS ARE FOCUSED ON TEACHING PARENTS AND CHILDREN WHO ARE AT HIGH RISK FOR POOR HEALTH TO PREVENT DENTAL DISEASE AT THE EARLIEST AGE. IN 2016, KCDC BECAME A DENTI-CAL PROVIDER, AGAIN, TO FILL A GAP OF VERY FEW PROVIDERS THROUGHOUT THE AREA. THE POPULATION IS NOT STABLE, SO A MIXTURE OF LOW INCOME/UININSURED AND DENTI-CAL PATIENTS MAKE UP THE POPULATION SERVED.
