Mission

The mission of Meals on Wheels of Long Beach (MOWLB) is to nourish, comfort and protect members of the community who are homebound due to age and/or medical or psychological problems. The organization's vision is, “Meals on Wheels of Long Beach will deliver nourishing meals to homebound clients five days a week using a volunteer work force of drivers and friendly visitors." MOWLB's goals are to provide the highest quality prepared meals with a friendly visit, and to continually grow the program delivery to ensure that we meet the needs of the vulnerable and isolated individuals in our community who need our services.

About

During 2018, Meals on Wheels of Long Beach (MOWLB) delivered 175,412 meals, an increase of over 50,000 meals in the last four years. In fact, MOWLB has consistently and sustainably increased the number of clients served during this period. Currently, MOWLB serves upwards of 425 homebound seniors, veterans and disabled, regardless of age, in Long Beach, Signal Hill and Leisure World Seal Beach. Each delivery with a "Friendly Visit" includes two complete means---a hot dinner, cold lunch, dessert and beverage. Our fee for this service is $8.25 per day, which 65% of our clients are able to pay this nominal fee. 35% of our clients receive the same meal service and are subsidized at 100% of the cost. These subsidies are supported by foundation grants, individual donors and fundraising projects. In addition, MOWLB is a service provider for SCAN Health Plan and Independence at Home, providing meal service to their approved members.MOWLB works to be "More than a Meal" for its clients by providing daily social contact with a "friendly visitor", wellness checks and connecting them with other nonprofit organizations to bring additional community support that improves their quality of life and helps them age in place comfortably.
