Saving the world's coral reefs

About

Science of adaptation to save coral reefs during an era of rapid environmental change, coral is (1) improving our scientific understanding of how organisms adapt to rapid change; and (2) using this knowledge to identify conservation strategies that promote adaptation and are robust to uncertainty about the future. Our research shows that evolution can help rescue coral reefs and that local management is essential to success. Coral is leading ongoing research on coral adaptation potential with university partners, employing funds from large, multi-year grants recorded as revenue in prior years, but available in the current year. We are turning this science into action by defining a new approach to conservation that we call adaptive reefscapes, which facilitates coral adaptation within diverse, connected, and large networks of healthy reefs.
