Mission

Our mission is to inspire and empower the youth of Monterey County to realize their full potential to become responsible, healthy, productive and successful citizens.

About

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County has been a part of the community since 1968. We serve an average of 600 children per day between the ages of 6 to 18 through two full service clubhouses. Our programming is based on Boys & Girls Clubs of America's three priority outcomes: Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles and Good Character & Citizenship. These three priority outcomes, along with 21st Century Skill Development, are the focus of our programming. The goal of our Academic Success Initiative is that every child we serve achieves on time grade progression, graduates from high school, completes post secondary education and earns a livable wage as a productive member of their community. In order to achieve this goal we offer a wide range of Academic programming from homework assistance for club members of all ages, to intervention programs in literacy for members in the 2nd-5th grade. Over the summer of 2019, our Read Naturally program helped to prevent summer slide. 100% of youth who participated increased their reading skills. We also offered STEAM integrated programs to help club members understand how Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics are connected. Members at our Seaside Clubhouse participated in a program known as Plants & Pollinators, where they learned how to care for plants and how plants/pollinators contribute to our global health; incorporating math, research skills, creation of care sheets for plants and cooking treats that would not exist without pollinators. Our Academic Success Initiative does not stop when our members are on school breaks. We offer comprehensive grade level programming in the morning at our two clubhouses with a project based focus. During the summer of 2019, our club members also learned about art and how it connects with technology by creating light up origami projects, practicing their science and engineering skills through research, and building famous structures. Youth completed projects and learned how to use logic and team work. Beyond our regular clubhouse and summer programming we hosted the 13th Career Expo for local middle and high school students to participate in group discussions and interviews with industry professionals. Survey data from the event showed that 94% of the 178 attendees learned what steps are needed to take to pursue successful careers. Our Healthy Lifestyles Initiative promotes wellness amongst Club members and their families in order to live healthier lives and build stronger and more informed communities. Targeted programming within the Healthy Lifestyles Initiative focus on prevention and learning opportunities with emphasis on nutritional education, avoidance of risky behaviors, improving self esteem, recreational opportunities, and developing pro-social behaviors. In the summer we offered the Johnson-Toney Football Camp as well as the Jose Gil Basketball camp. We also offered sports league opportunities for members of all ages in flag football, basketball, soccer, and track & field. Our Healthy Lifestyles Initiative includes meal service to club members. In 2019, the Boys & Girls Club served 100,619 meals. The Good Character & Citizenship Initiative develops strong, smart leaders and encourages youth to become community minded and engaged citizens who vote and model strong character. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County works to foster young people's good character, their ability to make positive life choices and their willingness to serve others. Our Keystone and Torch Club, service based leadership groups for members age 13-18, in the Salinas Clubhouse, for the third year, visited the local convalescent hospital to bring Christmas Cheer to senior citizens in the community. Beyond our leadership programs we hosted the 5th annual Gang Prevention Summit in Salinas, open to the community where panelists discussed their involvement and/or avoidance of gangs. A post summit survey revealed that 84% of the 173 attendees stated that they were less likely to join a gang.
