Mission

The objectives of the Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society (AAHS) are: to encourage scholarly pursuits into the history and anthropology of the southwest United States and northwest Mexico; (see Schedule O for full mission statement)

About

The organizations accomplishments for its four largest program services are the continued support of three sponsored projects (the Cocoraque Butte Rock Art Research Project; the Desperation Ranch Archaeological Project; and the Fort Mason Archaeological Project) and the establishment and support of the Traditional Technologies Program (which supports practitioners of traditional technologies from Native American and Hispanic communities by sponsoring travel to locations where they can learn from fellow practitioners in the US and Latin America). AAHS also awarded a grant for curriculum development to Walker Elementary School via the Orrell Fund. Another important accomplishment has been the awarding since 2010 to AAHS members of over $50,000 in research grants and over $18,000 in travel grants. This fiscal year we made two subvention awards to the University Press of Colorado for the book Ancient Southwestern Mortuary Practices and to the University of Arizona Press for the book From Peasant to Philanthropist: My Life. In 2018, a total of 11 monthly lectures at general meetings by well-respected archaeologists and historians on research in the American Southwest and Northwest Mexico attracted well over 850 attendees. Nine field trips were conducted for members to various locations in the Southwest. The AAHS also continued on-going publication of both our monthly newsletter, Glyphs, and our quarterly, peer-reviewed journal, Kiva.
