Mission

The mission of SARSEF is to create Arizona's next generation of scientists and engineers that are our world's future workforce. SARSEF began in 1955. Now SARSEF reaches 90,887 K-12 students in Arizona, providing free STEM Outreach to underrepresented students in areas of poverty and rural communities.
SARSEF's year-round STEM outreach to Arizona's K-12 students develops skills in critical thinking and problem-solving with a particular focus on underrepresented minorities and females in Title I schools in areas of poverty or rural communities. When students learn to think critically and solve problems at an early age, they form habits that will lead to their success in school not only short-term but in the future, as they enter the workforce.

About

K-12 Outreach Experiences: SARSEF teaches PreK-12 students the critical thinking and problem-solving skills they need to make a difference using science and engineering through hands-on workshops students are challenged to investigate real-life problems finding solutions that matter. The program included Professional Development for Teachers where they gained confidence and skills in teaching and integrating the new AZ Science Standards into hands-on research projects. Teachers explored thought-provoking activities, lesson design, and resources to make science and engineering experiences accessible to all students. The program also included workshops called Roadmap to a Rockin Project where Parents and Students worked together to identify an issue they care about and were guided in the development of a research project. This program culminated with the annual SARSEF Fair after 75,000 K-12 students in AZ conducted research projects to be considered as a representative of their school. The top 2,037 projects and 5,600 students advanced to this weeklong celebration of their achievements and further competition at the Tucson Convention Center.
