IN 1992, MILE HIGH YOUTH CORPS (MHYC) BEGAN ADDRESSING THE EDUCATIONAL AND EMPLOYMENT NEEDS OF DENVER'S YOUTH. FOUNDED AS YEAR ONE, INC., THE CORPS WAS ESTABLISHED TO HELP YOUTH MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THEMSELVES AND THEIR COMMUNITY THROUGH MEANINGFUL SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES AND EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES. THAT FIRST YEAR, 20 YOUTH SERVED DENVER NEIGHBORHOODS THROUGH A SINGLE 10-WEEK PROGRAM. TODAY, MILE HIGH YOUTH CORPS IS A COMPREHENSIVE, YEAR-ROUND MODEL SERVING 200 YOUNG ADULTS ANNUALLY AND 22 COLORADO COUNTIES - FROM BROOMFIELD COUNTY ALL THE WAY SOUTH TO THE NEW MEXICO BORDER - HAVING THE LARGEST GEOGRAPHIC FOOTPRINT AMONGST COLORADO'S EIGHT YOUTH CORPS. YOUTH, AGES 17-24, RECEIVE ON-THE-JOB TRAINING AND CAREER READINESS PROGRAMS LEADING TO THE OBTAINMENT OF INDUSTRY-RECOGNIZED CERTIFICATIONS, AN AMERICORPS EDUCATION AWARD AND LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES TO HELP THEM ACHIEVE THEIR EDUCATIONAL AND EMPLOYMENT GOALS. THESE YOUNG ADULTS, CALLED CORPSMEMBERS, ARE EMPLOYED AND TRAINED TO SERVE ON COMMUNITY-BASED PROJECTS RELATED TO LAND CONSERVATION, ENERGY AND WATER CONSERVATION, HEALTH AND WELLNESS AND CONSTRUCTION. THEY RECEIVE WRAPAROUND SUPPORT SERVICES AND FOR THOSE THAT NEED THEM, HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY CLASSES ARE OFFERED. TO DATE, MILE HIGH YOUTH CORPS HAS SERVED 3,900 CORPSMEMBERS, PROVIDED 3.4 MILLION IN AMERICORPS EDUCATION AWARDS, AND DELIVERED 1.3 MILLION HOURS OF SERVICE. MILE HIGH YOUTH CORPS OUTCOMES ARE COMPILED AT PROGRAM COMPLETION, AND REFLECT THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF CORPSMEMBERS WHO COMPLETED THEIR TERM OF SERVICE IN THE 2018 CALENDAR YEAR. 83% OF CORPSMEMBERS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THEIR TERM OF SERVICE. 82% EARNED AN AMERICORPS EDUCATION AWARD TO BE USED TOWARDS POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION. 92% OF CORPSMEMBERS WERE PLACED INTO EMPLOYMENT OR POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION WITHIN THREE MONTHS FOLLOWING PROGRAM COMPLETION. 91% OF CORPSMEMBERS SELF-REPORTED AT THE END OF THEIR TERM THAT MHYC HAD A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THEIR LIFE AND FUTURE. IN 2018 THROUGH THEIR DAILY WORK, CORPSMEMBERS LEFT A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY AROUND THEM AS 200 CORPSMEMBERS CONTRIBUTED A COMBINED TOTAL 94,462 SERVICE HOURS, EARNING 287,641 IN AMERICORPS EDUCATION AWARDS. COMMUNITY/ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT INCLUDED: 600 ACRES OF LAND IMPROVED 1,300 LOW-INCOME HOMES AND NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS RECEIVED ENERGY AND WATER EFFICIENCY MEASURES 72 UNITS OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING BUILT WITH DENVER HOUSING AUTHORITY 11 VISITS TO 9 ELDER CARE COMMUNITIES WITH BESSIE'S HOPE
