About
Our Friends Place mission is to help young women break the generational cycles of abuse, neglect, poverty, and homelessness through empowering self-reliance and independence. Our Friends Place programming emphasizes empowerment, not entitlement, and guides young women along a healthy path by stressing the importance of education, career planning, financial literacy, and self-reliance. Our Friends Place has two programs to achieve its mission. SOAR to Success is a non-residential mentoring program for young women teaching life skills to prevent them from becoming homeless. SOAR to Success brings the award-winning life skills lessons out of the Transitional Living Centers (TLC) and into high schools, colleges, and partner agencies in North Texas. The purpose of SOAR to Success is to help at-risk youth with the life skills needed to build their own Strengths, Opportunities, Allies, and Resiliency (SOAR) before they become homeless. Our Friends Place served 420 youth through our SOAR to Success program in 2018, a 438% increase from 78 youth served in 2017.Our Friends Place Transitional Living Center (TLC) program provides secure and stable housing for homeless young women ages 18-24 to become economically self-sufficient. Our Friends Place operates two TLCs with a total of 18 beds for young women to have a stable home while they work, pursue an education, and gain life-skills to become self-reliant. The TLCs provide a supervised apartment setting for young women who are not pregnant or parenting. Program requirements include: obtaining and maintaining a steady job, paring a portion of their paycheck to savings and a minimal rent, enrolling in classes, meeting regularly with the on-site case manager, and attending weekly life skills lessons. In 2011, the Center of Nonprofit Management recognized our TLC with its award of Excellence in Social Innovation (budget under $1 million). Our 2011 program evaluation shows that our TLC program is effective in its outcomes and costs. Young women in our TLC program for 3 months or longer accomplished the following goals (ten year averages): 94% have not become pregnant while in the program; 91% have increased their job-related skills by learning how to properly fill out applications, submit resumes, and conduct efficient job searches; 88% have enrolled in educational or vocational courses to increase employability; 83% have been actively employed at least part-time; 76% successfully completed the program or are still in the TLC program. Our Friends Place served 36 young women through our Transitional Living Center program in 2018.Providing a continuum of care that includes case management throughout our programs has positively impacted new, existing, and former clients as they learn to break the generational cycles of abuse, neglect, poverty, and homelessness.
