Preservation Austin holds two major educational and outreach opportunities: heritage home tours in the spring and recognition ceremony in the fall. The heritage home tours highlight different neighborhoods each year. We have over 150 volunteers as docents/logistics/committee members. People open their homes for 1 day and we usually have between 600 and 1,000 visitors through the houses. The recognition ceremony highlights preservation projects here in Austin including rehabilitation and restoration of houses, buildings and sites. The ceremony honors visionary approaches to preserving Austin's unique architectural, cultural, and environmental heritage-such as the city of Austin cemetery preservation plan and to people such as Michael Barnes who has written extensively about Austin history. The organization also holds several free events for members and the public. The history hunt was a free children's event that highlights teaching them about architecture and preservation.
