COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS OF CENTRAL TEXAS (CISCT) SERVED 43,585 STUDENTS AND FAMILY MEMBERS DURING THE 2018-2019 SCHOOL YEAR ON 66 PUBLIC SCHOOL CAMPUSES WITH THE HIGHEST CONCENTRATION OF CHILDREN LIVING IN POVERTY AND AT RISK OF DROPPING OUT OF SCHOOL.CISCT USES A PROVEN, EVIDENCE-BASED MODEL TO SUPPORT THE STUDENTS IN OUR COMMUNITY FACING THE GREATEST OBSTACLES TO SUCCESS IN SCHOOL, INCLUDING POVERTY, UNMET HEALTH NEEDS, HUNGER, HOMELESSNESS, AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.THE COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS MODEL IS UNIQUE AND BRINGS RESOURCES AND RELATIONSHIPS TO WHERE CHILDREN ALREADY SPEND THEIR DAYS - THE PUBLIC SCHOOL. THESE RESOURCES ARE DELIVERED IN A CARING, COORDINATED MANNER. CISCT SUPPORTS ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE, AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS BY PROVIDING A RANGE OF INDIVIDUALIZED SERVICES, INCLUDING INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING, SUPPORT GROUPS, TUTORING, MENTORING, BASIC NEEDS, CAREER EXPLORATION OPPORTUNITIES, AND CRISIS INTERVENTION.THE COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS MODEL WORKS. IN THE 2018-2019 SCHOOL YEAR, 99% OF THE STUDENTS CASE MANAGED BY CISCT COMPLETED THE SCHOOL YEAR ENROLLED IN SCHOOL AND 84% IMPROVED GRADES, ATTENDANCE, AND/OR BEHAVIOR.IN ADDITION TO CAMPUS PROGRAMMING FOLLOWING THE CIS MODEL, CISCT ALSO SUPPORTS STUDENTS THROUGH FOUR PREVENTION PROGRAMS:ASPIRE FAMILY LITERACY IS AN AWARD-WINNING PROGRAM SERVING FAMILIES WHO HAVE CHILDREN 0-7 YEARS OLD WITH PARENTS IN NEED OF ESL AND/OR GED CLASSES. ASPIRE RAISES LITERACY LEVELS FOR BOTH CHILDREN AND PARENTS. CHILDREN START SCHOOL BETTER PREPARED, AND FAMILIES HAVE A MORE SOLID FOUNDATION ON WHICH TO BUILD A SUCCESSFUL FUTURE. 100 FAMILIES AND CHILDREN RECEIVED SERVICES THROUGH ASPIRE IN THE 2018-2019 SCHOOL YEAR.THE PEBBLE PROJECT PROVIDED EFFECTIVE ABUSE PREVENTION TRAINING TO 4,425 CHILDREN DURING THE 2018-2019 SCHOOL YEAR ON 41 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CAMPUSES. THE PEBBLE PROJECT PREVENTS CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT BY EMPOWERING CHILDREN TO CONTRIBUTE TO THEIR OWN SAFETY THROUGH RECOGNIZING ABUSIVE OR DANGEROUS SITUATIONS, RESISTING BULLIES, AND TELLING A TRUSTED ADULT IF THEY HAVE BEEN HARMED. THE PEBBLE PROJECT TEACHES STUDENTS TO BECOME THEIR OWN ADVOCATES.THE SMARTKIDS PROGRAM BEGAN 18 YEARS AGO IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CITY OF AUSTIN HOUSING AUTHORITY AND IT HAS HAD CONSISTENT POSITIVE OUTCOMES FOR THE STUDENTS ENROLLED IN THE PROGRAM. SMARTKIDS PROVIDED A WIDE RANGE OF SUPPORT FOR 210 CHILDREN LIVING IN PUBLIC HOUSING LAST YEAR, INCLUDING ACADEMIC, EMOTIONAL, BASIC NEEDS, AND FAMILY SUPPORT. SMARTKIDS COORDINATORS WORK WITH STUDENTS BOTH ON THEIR SCHOOL CAMPUSES AND AFTER SCHOOL AT FOUR PUBLIC HOUSING SITES.THE NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED XY-ZONE IS A LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND PEER SUPPORT PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL MALES. THE PROGRAM CURRICULUM IS FOCUSED ON THE FIVE R'S - RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, RELATIONSHIPS, ROLE MODELING, AND REACHING OUT. STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN GROUP ACTIVITIES AND SERVICE LEARNING PROJECTS THAT BENEFIT THE COMMUNITY IN 2018-2019. 464 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THE PROGRAM AND 96% SHOWED IMPROVEMENT IN GRADES, ATTENDANCE, AND/OR BEHAVIOR.
