The VZS was established to direct the management of the Gladys Porter Zoo, a facility built by the Earl C. Sams Foundation and given to the City of Brownsville, Texas in 1971. The VZS Board provides broad oversight for paid Zoo staff, sets policies, raises funds, and acts as an advocate for the Gladys Porter Zoo.
