Mission

MRDF was established in 1970 to develop a better understanding of the earth's marine resources and improve the quality of life through education and the responsible use of marine resources for food, fresh water, energy, minerals, and medicine. In 1984, MRDF launched the world's first underwater habitat open to recreational divers and students - the MarineLab Undersea Laboratory. In 1985, a marine science education program, named MarineLab after the Undersea Laboratory, was created. MarineLab has grown from serving under 500 students in 1986 to 4,000 students and teachers each year. MarineLab's mission is to use education and adventure in the Florida Keys to foster environmental awareness and stewardship on a local, regional, and global scale.

About

REACHING OVER 4000 STUDENTS THIS YEAR, OUR MARINELAB PROGRAMS INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO MARINE SCIENCE CONCEPTS THROUGH HANDS-ON LABS, DISCUSSION ACTIVITIES, AND SNORKELING EXPLORATIONS BY BOAT ON OUR US COAST GUARD INSPECTED VESSELS. FOR MANY OF OUR STUDENTS, THIS IS THEIR FIRST EXPERIENCE OF THE OCEAN. OUR CURRICULUM IS BASED ON CURRENT SCIENCE, AND CONCEPTS ARE REINFORCED THROUGHOUT THE PROGRAM. FIELD EXPERIENCES HAVE BEEN PROVEN TO INCREASE RETENTION OF KNOWLEDGE - PLUS THE STUDENTS ARE EXPERIENCING NATURE UNPLUGGED IN AN INCREASINGLY PLUGGED-IN WORLD. PARTICIPATION IN CITIZEN SCIENCE PROJECTS AND ADVANCED PROGRAMS IS AVAILABLE FOR HIGH SCHOOL AGE STUDENTS.
