DIGITAL LAB NOTEBOOK (DLN) GRANT PROJECT - CHI WAS AWARDED A NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES (NEH) PRESERVATION AND ACCESS TRAINING GRANT TO SUPPORT A PROJECT ENTITLED "THE DEMOCRATIZATION OF SCIENTIFIC IMAGING THROUGH METADATA MANAGEMENT AND ARCHIVAL SUBMISSION SUPPORT." THE PROJECT BEGAN IN JANUARY, 2018 AND IS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE DIGITAL LAB NOTEBOOK (DLN) SOFTWARE TOOLS, WHICH SIMPLIFY THE COLLECTION, MANAGEMENT, ARCHIVING AND SHARING OF CULTURAL HERITAGE IMAGE DATA AND ASSOCIATED METADATA. IN JUNE 2018 CHI ROLLED OUT THE FIRST BETA DOWNLOADS OF THE NEW DIGITAL LAB NOTEBOOK SOFTWARE. TO AID USERS IN ADOPTION, CHI POSTED USER GUIDES, INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS, DISCUSSION FORUMS AND SEVERAL NEW AND UPDATED WEB PAGES. BY MAY, THE CHI TEAM HAD INCORPORATED THE DLN BETA TOOLS INTO THE ONGING TRANING CLASSES. DURING THE YEAR, THE TRAINERS DELIVERED WORKSHOPS AND TALKS AT CULTURAL HERITAGE CONFERENCES TO DISSEMINATE USE OF THESE NEW TOOLS.2. TRAINING AND WORKSHOPS-CHI DELIVERED SEVEN 4-DAY TRAINING CLASSES FOR CULTURAL CARETAKERS TO LEARN HOW TO APPLY SCIENTIFIC IMAGING METHODS. OF THESE, THREE PHOTOGRAMMETRY CLASSES AND ON RTI CLASS WERE HELD AT THE CHI STUDIO IN SAN FRANCISCO. THE CHI TRAINERS ALSO DELIVERED THREE PHOTOGRAMMETRY CLASSES AT REMOTE SITES: THE NORTH CAROLINA MUSEUM OF ART, PU'UHONUA O HONAUNAU NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK IN KONA, HAWAII, AND FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY IN TALLAHASSEE. A TOTAL OF 57 PEOPLE RECEIVED TRAINING IN THESE CLASSES.3. CONSULTING PROJECTS-CHI CONSULTED ON SEVERAL PROJECTS THIS YEAR. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT PROJECTS IN 2018 ARE THE ONGOING DIEGO RIVERA MURAL PROJECT AND THE WORK IN ALBANIA. DIEGO RIVERA MURAL AT CITY COLLEGE OF SAN FRANCISCO: FOLLOWING CHI'S 2017 IMAGE CAPTURE OF THE "PAN AMERICAN UNITY" MURAL, THE TEAM PRESENTED THE FINAL 2D OUTPUTS AT THE DIGITAL HERITAGE CONFERENCE IN SAN FRANCISCO IN OCTOBER. CHI ALSO JOINED THE STANFORD UNIVERSITY LIBARIES IN A PLAN TO RELEASE HIGH-RESOLUTION 2D IMAGES OF THE MURAL PUBLICLY. 4. EXPANDING IMAGING IN ALBANIA: THIS MULTI-PHASE PROJECT BEGAN IN 2017 WITH FUNDING FROM THE ALBANIAN AMERICAN DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION (AADF). IN THE FIRST PHASE THE CHI TEAM IMAGED ICONS AND OTHER MATERIAL IN THREE ALBANIAN MUSEUMS AND WORKED WITH THE MUSEUM STAFF TO DEMONSTRATE RTI AND PHOTOGRAMMETRY TECHNIQUES. THAT PHASE WAS COMPLETED IN 2018 WITH PLANNING FOR A FOLLOW-UP PROJECT, WHICH WILL BUILD THE KNOWLEDGE FOUNDATION AND DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURE FOR CULTURAL HERITAGE DOCUMENTATION IN ALBANIA, DEVELOPING A NATIONALLY INTEGRATED, COMPUTATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY CAPACITY AT THE NEW NATIONAL CENTER FOR DIGITATION AND TWO ALBANIAN MUSEUMS.5. CONFERENCES AND PRESENTATIONS-IN ADDITION TO THE TRAINING CLASSES AND PROJECTS DESCRIBED ABOVE, THE CHI TEAM TRAVELED WIDELY THIS YEAR TO SPREAD KNOWLEDGE ABOUT PHOTOGRAMMETRY, 3D IMAGING,AND THE NEW DIGITAL LAB NOTEBOOK TOOLS FOR COLLECTING AND MANAGING METADATA. SUPPORT FOR SCIENTIFIC IMAGING IN THE CULTURAL HERITAGE COMMUNITY - CHI CONTINUES TO SUPPORT CULTURAL HERITAGE STEWARDS AROUND THE WORLD WITH FREELY ACCESSIBLE RESOURCES INCLUDING: USER DISCUSSION FORUMS, DOWNLOADABLE OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE, USER GUIDES, INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS ON THE CHI WEBSITE, REGULAR POSTING OF RELATED NEWS ON FACEBOOK, AND A FLICKR IMAGE GALLERY.
