Mission
TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT THE POTENTIAL TO REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL HARM BY SHIFTING ELECTRICITY USE TO PARTICULAR TIMES; AND TO SUPPORT THE RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT AND SPREAD OF COMMON PROTOCOLS FOR THIS PRACTICE.
About
WATTTIME CONTINUES TO OPERATE A SINGLE CONSOLIDATED RESEARCH, EDUCATION AND ASSISTANCE PROGRAM FOR THE PRACTICE OF REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL HARM BY SHIFTING ELECTRICITY USE TO PARTICULAR TIMES. WHILE WE HAVE PREVIOUSLY REFERRED TO THIS PRACTICE AS ENVIRONMENTAL DEMAND RESPONSE OR EDR, THIS YEAR WE SWITCHED TO CALLING IT BY THE NOW MORE WIDELY ACCEPTED NAME FOR THE SAME PRACTICE: AUTOMATED EMISSIONS REDUCTION OR AER. IN FY2019, THIS CONSOLIDATED PROGRAM MADE SUBSTANTIAL PROGRESS IN ALL THREE AREAS: 1) IN TERMS OF RESEARCH, WE RESEARCHED THE NEXT GENERATION OF ALGORITHMS THAT CAN DETECT WHICH TIMES ELECTRICITY CAUSED LESS POLLUTION, INCLUDING EXPANDING TO DETECTING NEW KINDS OF ENVIRONMENTAL HARM (SUCH AS MERCURY EMISSIONS THROUGH WORK WITH THE GREAT LAKES PROTECTION FUND), CONTINUED ON SCH O.AND DETECTING WHICH TIMES WERE CLEANEST IN NEW REGIONS (SUCH AS NEW COUNTRIES). AN IMPORTANT ELEMENT OF THIS RESEARCH WAS STARTING TO USE SATELLITE IMAGERY TO DETECT POLLUTION FROM POWER PLANTS ALL OVER THE WORLD. 2) IN TERMS OF EDUCATION, WE EDUCATED SUSTAINABILITY STAFF AT NUMEROUS PROMINENT INSTITUTIONS AND GROUPS WHO USE LARGE QUANTITIES OF ELECTRICITY (SUCH AS MICROSOFT AND GOOGLE) OR TO UNDERSTAND WHEN AND WHERE USING ELECTRICITY LEADS TO THE LEAST ENVIRONMENTAL HARM. (3) IN TERMS OF ASSISTANCE, WE HELPED COMPANIES SUCH AS LIBERTY ACCESS TECHNOLOGIES BEGIN ACTIVELY SHIFTING ENERGY CONSUMPTION TO CLEANER TIMES, WHICH WE REFER TO AS "ADOPTING AER". WE ALSO WORKED ON COMMON PROTOCOL DEVELOPMENT WITH MULTIPLE ORGANIZATIONS (MOST NOTABLY THE CONTINUED WORK WITH STAKEHOLDERS IN THE CALIFORNIA ENERGY STORAGE INDUSTRY AND THE NATIONAL GREEN BUILDING INDUSTRY) TO MORE UNIFORMLY MEASURE CLEAN TIMES TO USE ELECTRICITY AND SHIFT ENERGY CONSUMPTION LESS POLLUTING TIMES.
