About this organization
Mission
To resolve the most important problems of low income and other vulnerable people by providing high quality legal assistance through direct representation, education, advice, advocacy and coordination with other community resources.
About
We provide civil legal assistance at no charge to low-income families with children, the elderly, veterans and people needing access to healthcare. The people we serve often live with the risk of losing something be it their home, job, health, safety or independence. We target people living in violence, people with an impediment to family stabilization, those that cannot find stable employment and families at risk for homelessness. Through the legal system, we can preserve the home, protect assets, stop the violence, remove employment barriers, and support families towards the goal of achieving maximum independence and safety. Last year we reached over 28,000 people, advocated for over 9,300 and provided legal representation to 16,847. Private attorneys donated $282,400 in services to our clients.LEGAL AID OF THE BLUEGRASS (LABG) In 2018, we changed the screening process for potential clients to expedite services to eligible Kentuckians. The previous system allowed callers to select options based on their legal issue and leave a message for our team to call them back. Due to the incredibly high volume of messages and repeats we were unable to respond to many requests for service. Additionally, many complex legal issues require analysis to identify and prioritize issues and callers were selecting options that did not match their legal problem. Now, our intake specialist screen callers LIVE Monday-Friday 10:30am-3:30pm. This allows for our team to identify and prioritize their legal issues immediately and make referrals to appropriate service agencies when not a case type LABG handles. Additionally, we implemented an online screening tool for applicants to complete at any time. Our new system has been well received by our community and allows us to help people faster. LABG Focused Reach 2018: LABG reached 28,447 of its target population through direct services or outreach. Our outreach advocacy efforts positively impacted 9,356 people.
